Analasis between Homemade breeches and kits for the longshot

Sleeper Vs. Alpha! (LS)

I am going to build 2 Longshots one with the alpha and one as a sleeper i want to know the pro's and con's of each, starting with me :
Alpha :
    1. Its a kit so no real work is required with little room for mistakes.
    2. comes with stronger then stock parts.
    3. It shoots stefans so its accurate and reliable.
    1. it seems to have a lower power output then sleeper breechs.
    2. only stefans so its restricted in certain wars that most players play with full length darts. (omni will come but it looks like it wont fully seal).
    1. seems to have a higher output of power.
    2. modularity, Eg. shoots all kinds of darts, changeable barrel length for different springs.
    3. Diy, which means a cheaper build cost and you can make it the way you want.
    4. you can buy these but for a much higher price for what you get then the alpha.
    1. Huge space for error, depending on the experience of the maker.
    2. Lower reliability, also depending on the quality of the build.
    3. entry lever is high compared to the alpha which you just need a couple of screw drivers, as you need a bunch of tools and epoxys and know-how as to using them.
   4. might not yield as high precision as manufactured kits with better Tolerances.

Also on FB in the Turf forum :

I would build a proper sleeper breech, you can do so for much less than the cost of the kits and all the pusher type kits I have seen so far, indeed anything using an O ring seal, have been junk. They have only made lots of power via huge spring loads and the pre cut barrel means you are stuck with someone else's potentially untested and poorly calculated assumption about barrel length, which may not relate at all to the spring rate you are shooting.
I would also check out the Lipless breech for full length and short darts featured by PSYK. It had minimal deadspace and allowed barrel tuning as well as using printed parts to reduce alignment error.

Most people here are not that interested in longshots or short darts since neither are that prevelant at U.K. games and anything over 130fps can only be used on private land, so I don't know how much input you will get.
We would be pleased to see the results of your mod, especially with some decent FPS figures and a detailed build log. There are a few people interested in the sleeper breech design and there's no detailed build guide on it outside closed groups.

If you have the skills, know how and time, do a custom sleeper brass breech, from our experience.  I've been using one of our old breeches for years now and its still going strong, still sealing near 100%, still performing and working as expected.  We've had our experiences with 'off the shelf kits' and were disappointed, power is down, your limited to certain length darts, seems like they are untested and unrefined.

So for us.  Go the custom brass breech.  Learns some skills in the trade, its what we do, its our hobby.  Usually the first one is a practice run, you might make mistakes, but from there you are on your way and you can build em as you please.  Enjoy!
