Battle of Britain

So,
say there was to be some sort of North vs south, home internationals, battle of Britain type Nerf war thing.
With a full days worth of battles and a bit of a social afterwards, who would be interested?

How far would you travel?

Who would you want to fight for?

How much would you be willing to pay towards venue hire?

Lets hear your thoughts?
Justajolt

a. I'd be interested.

b. I'd travel further than for a normal war.

c. The South. JK. North OBVS.

d. As little as possible (too long in Yorkshire!) BUT if it involved a camp-over... might be flexible on that. I prefer the idea of an outdoors event.
OldNoob

Moved, as it's a Nerf war to end all Nerf wars. We had Jamboree last year, play all day, BBQ, drink mead, sleep, breakfast then home.
Happy to pay up to £20 for a 2 day, generally you are best travelling Friday, stay Friday night, then war Saturday, home Saturday early evening.
Cali-Nerfer

Wow someone should film this!
UKNerfWar

I'd be down for this.

Outdoors with camping would be ideal. I'd be prepared to do a 4-6hr round trip in a day but for dinner and a sleepover I'd happily up that to 8. Jamboree was the perfect example of this format although I wouldn't expect the toilets to be as posh this time.

If someone is prepared to host this then they can count on my full support.

1 round of Jamboree HvZ and my rig and UkNerfwar. Others on there too.

Hello!

ill see what I can do when dates arrive.

Obviously im fighting for the cats up north
Davera

If an outdoor venue is the preferred option, then it really needs to be hosted down south so it doesn't get rained off.

Oh and I would be happy to travel over 2 hours for and overnight thing. One night is preferable to two.
Davidov

A couple of hours unless I can jump in with someone else.
The south.
£20, maybe a bit more to fund BBQ.

And I wouldn't expect toilets as fancy as the Jamboree, but wouldn't say no. The friday arrival, play saturday and head off from there is a tried and tested format as far as I'm concerned and makes the event feel longer and more sociable.

And getting in there - I can supply a bar Wink

It's a well known fact that grim up Nerf functions best when it snows, apart from last weekend when I actually got tan lines!

Would travel a few hours, especially with other GuNr's to keep us company. Cost depends on what is on offer.

I'm a southerner in self imposed exile in the north, mainly because they have hills. So I'd defend the North's pride.

Can I suggest if a suitable venue is found that each faction offers to supply games and player logistics to support the organizer.
Rab

I hadnt really expected so many shouts for an outdoor venue, you couldnt plan it for 15 minutes time and be guaranteed of it still being dry up here 😂

Purely for logistics, id thought some where central, good transport links and indoors  (large sports hall)

Like the Friday night Saturday war set up.
Off to watch you vids ON
Dustybin

An outdoor arena would be best because you are talking around 30-60 nerfers (most of them are southerners) so an outdoor arena would be best. I am up for this (hopefully) as long as there is an option that is not camping.

About £20 is the max for us, I feel that the northerners are going to be outnumbered so I might have to leave the south and join the north.

Yes, if there was more than 2 factions, then one could host/referee a round or two.

Would be nice to see each region bring their own game type.
daniel k

Would there be an age limit, because if not my family could come, but if so, we couldn't come. Venue wise, £25 and distance wise, family trip so 3-4 hour drive?
blindgeekuk

If you want to big open field, consider something like a caravan/campsite rally field. Often these are by a pub. I've stayed on a few 5 van cl's over the years that dwarf the two venues for GuN.

If you want more rustic camping and trees, consider a scout campsite, kinda like Greencloaks use.

In terms of distance, it depends where it is and when it is, and who else is going. If it's just me, and i'm coaching/training it down to a venue, Nottingham is about the limit (watersports centre there has a rally field)

If i'm sharing a car with fellow GuN'rs, then the limit becomes how far they can feasibly drive in an evening after Nerf'ing. Again, probably around Nottingham!

I'd obviously fight for the northerners, '1st regiment of God's own countrymen'

Happy to contribute towards costs, amount based on rather than covers the camping field hire, food etc i'm less of a skin flint than my co-conspirators, and Al in for travel etc i'd probably set myself a budget of £60-£75.

However, it's all very much dependent on date and location. I'd need to give a months notice at work to take a Friday afternoon off, and my nutty wife is likely to hit the roof if I even suggest it at the moment
UKNerfWar

Who do we know in/around Birmingham? That's about as 'middle' as we can get between the main populations.

Any Brummy nerfers speak up. We need your help!
Rab

I was thinking the same thing , what you lot call north i reckon is pretty central 😂

We were actually speaking about this at the skatepark event on Saturday  and had thought late on in the year when everyone had all their summer events out the way.

At that time of year,  we'd thought indoor sport halls.

Realistically how many players would you expect, im guessing this would be something that may only appeal to the more enthusiastic nerfer
OldNoob

I would be very surprised if we topped 30 players.
TheIronKraigen

it depends entirely where you plan on holding it hombrés.
Dustybin

Don't worry! I am located just south of Birmingham in a town called Bromsgrove, if you want I could do some research into finding a venue nearby.
OldNoob

Weather in Sept/Oct is usually more reliable than August, at least it is south of the Watford Gap.
Rab

OldNoob wrote:

Thats the sort of numbers i was thinking,

But to think it may just be the most elite nerfers in the country 😎

😉😆😂
blindgeekuk

There's plenty of scout sites around the bottom side of Birmingham and coventry. Blackwell Adventure, and Rough Close spring to mind, but i'm pretty sure they are scouting/youth groups only.

Indoor sports hall, based on Leeds prices would be ridiculous. You'd be better off looking at various churches.

Dustybin wrote:

That's the spirit! Please do buddy. I'm sure your old man is chomping at the bit to go NERFing again!

30 players sounds about right. Hendon had 20 and that was a good turnout for Davidovs first event. I should imagine this would attract more, especially if we can get the Brummy HvZ group involved.
daniel k

This would be awesome, although would it be adults only?
Lythy

I'm sort of equal distance between Brum and Stratford upon Avon and nowhere immediately springs to mind. In terms of public spaces there's the Lickey Hills park (insert obvious joke here), it's maintained by the council, there's Cofton Park and Cannon Hill Park as well - they're all big but likely to be over run with Brummies playing at being in the countryside. I've played hockey at a few leisure centres around the city but can't remember anywhere with a decent sized indoor area. There's a few old/disused aerodromes near Stratford and around the vale of Evesham, not sure how you'd go about contacting the owners, though.

Sorry gents, I've been pretty useless there!

Dont see why it would need to be, usual thing with responsible adult/chaperone for juniors at the games.

Im guessing juniors would be travelling with adult anyway.

Quick google around is showing council or uni basketball halls for 35 to 45 quid an hour. If you got 30 folk at a tenner a head thats 7hrs hall hire even at the expensive rate.
daniel k

OK, brilliant. In that case I think we are good to go!
UKNerfWar

I still think something outdoorsy would be best. The idea of an overnighter will make it more worth while for people doing a longer haul. Plus I like the more social atmosphere that it'd create. It would be cool to get to know people before/after spending the day pelting them.
blindgeekuk

I'd prefer a camp over, haven't had chance to for the last 18 months.

Other options to consider: youth service centres (leeds has laser centre for example that you can camp in and hire the buildings), ymca facilities (two large halls in leeds, though always in use because they are cheap), tareserve forces/cadets barracks (alternativevenues.org for details), airsoft sites

Justajolt, do you have any contact details for the chapel at junction 10 of the m6. Looks similar size to Tong, but a huge field behind that they might let us camp on, maybe if we suggest we'll run something for their youth?
Elime_rawne

This is going to be excellent.

Echoing everyone else, £25 excluding transport/food. Camping preferred as it allows a full day of activities.
old_man_nerf

I expanded the search a little and have seen something which looks suitable. Have sent an initial enquiry - which may come to nothing so don't all hold your breath - will keep you posted.
Northwind

I'd be up for this. Basically anywhere north of about Birmingham would work for me I reckon, I can mix in other stuff on the trip to make the most of the miles. And cost, depends what it is! But £25 no bother, bit more depending on facilities.

Incidentally, slander! It rains pretty much exactly the same in Brum as in Edinburgh and way more in Manchester and London. Not that I'm suggesting we do it in Edinburgh, because we're miles from everyone but, honour demands a response.
Davera

I have some contacts around Derby that I will make enquiries with.
Franksie

There is Pikes Pool near you that is occasionally used for LARP plus Blackwell Court Scout Camp (if its still there?).

Also there is Waseley Hills Country Park and Lickey Hills.  (I'm formerly from Stourbridge)
Shady-daze

On the premise alone, hell yeah, though whether I could attend would be based on a lot of other factors, when? and where? being the two biggest factors.
OldNoob

I just want to take Boff an Kev to Lickey Hills....
old_man_nerf

.... Makes note to create a 'special mission' for the more devoted players in the group....

Boff mad I have already been. i bought some home made hand lotion from a lady in the local pub and the storage unit we stayed in was very nice.
bigal123

I would make the effort to head down south for this. Coming from Scotland and my dad being a good Yorkshire man I would fling foam for the north.
dabrad89

Id be up for it -  ive scanned through the posts so sorry if this has beeen already said but maybe a day  event and then over night aswel for those who can stay

(digs out his tent)
FDT

Count me in. All dependant on dates. Also happy to round up the Scots in one big garrison and descend South...
blindgeekuk

I've just done a rough count at there's about 17 posts of yes i'd come, with a few of those being 'depending on x' criteria such as dates or location.

There's a few regulars who've not said yay or nay, who'd i'd expect to, and there's the fact that we all have family or friends or members of our local groups who might want to come

30 seems a likely number
Dazzle740

I too could be tempted by this.
But again as said previously by a few it would depend on date, distance to travel and cost etc.
I have just bought a house (going through at mo, and seemed like a good idea at the time !!!!) which once completed will require work doing to it, so that would put a strain on available funds and time but if enough planning/notice given sure something could be worked out.
Plus I have a 7 seater so could possibly meet with other GuN'ers and share travel cost?? it's an option.
blindgeekuk

I'm not sure what the current status is, Old_Man_Nerf was getting quotes from various sites around Birmingham area.

I've managed to get the missus to agree that I can have a weekend away from the kids, so as long as we don't do it the weekends 29th'31st July or 12th-14th August, I should be fine.

Dazzle740, it'd probably be massively out of your way to get us lot in Leeds, but tbr and Dark Kitten would be feasible if they want to come.

I've got a huge 8 man tunnel tent that's missing the internal bays, that I could bring to act as a HQ tent. Beyond that, we switched from camping to caravaning so not really got much group usable gear, most of my camping gear is backpacking/bushcrafting based.
Dazzle740

I have a 8 man tent with 4 internal pods (2 per pod) which could be used if required, if we went down the camping route.

Looks up train times...
Yup I'd do one of the days probably not stay overnight but still stay.
Realises that the maps think hes is wales.
Well it looks like a few trains from picaddly Manchesterbut is still feasible.

The sound of the September date sounds good as i won't quite yet be back in school but it is still way after my summer outing to France.
FDT

Are we sticking a pin in 2-4 Sept? Brum or nearby?
Davera

FDT wrote:

Can we stick a poll up with a few suggested dates? That one is not good for me.
blindgeekuk

2nd to 4th is not the final date, it was just a date I threw out as being good for me (though actually probably isn't, that's the weekend before the next software release I work on...)

I know Old_man_nerf has been in contact with at least one suitable venue, but that there were issues with it he'd rather avoid.

He's still looking for something suitable in the Birmingham area as that puts it around 3 hours away for most people. Obviously, for you guys in scotland that's probably 6 hours away?
FDT

Brum can be done in 5. Yeah get venue sorted then let us all know dates. Thanks for the efforts...
epicgp126

Just by looking at the original message I thought i could do this.
looking down the posts, 2nd-4th of September I will go.
daniel k

Cannot do 2-4th, Brothers birthday. But can do 2-3, then leave that night whalst everybody else stays.
blindgeekuk

2nd-4th Sept is not the final date!!! it just a date I said I would like if possible!!!

The suggestion was arrive friday night, game saturday, leave saturday evening

I would suggest doing a bbq on the friday night or sat lunch time either bring food, or drinkto share?
epicgp126

Ok
epicgp126

The suggestion sounds good, so do we give all the dates that we are free and you decide a date that were are all free?
blindgeekuk

Nope

Let's let the people who are trying to sort out a location do that first, and when they have a list of available dates, put it to a vote.
Dustybin

Just to let you know, my English teacher might join in because he wants to go to a Nerf war that is nearby.
Dazzle740

I agree with Blindgeek, we need to hang fire on trying to organise a date and wait to see what venue can get secured/booked and for when and then go from there.
Franksie

I'm up for attending as long as it's not my weekend with my kids (too young to play yet)
epicgp126

Bring your own darts or are they supplied? I don't mind bringing my own.
blindgeekuk

No idea yet

Personally, what i'd do is have a charge of say £20 that covers your camping, firewood, 100 darts, insurance and a snack pack. And I'm sure GuN will bring some of their magic refilling dart bag Smile

That way you don't have to worry about losing your own darts, and whats left at the end could potentially be split amongst the new groups that are being formed in order to help grow our communtiy.
Northwind

Good idea that. It's really important to protect the organisers too, I used to run club events and with the best will in the world there was still always some overlooked expense or missed payment and I'd often end up out of pocket. I didn't mind tbh but if we're going to err here we should do it on the side of too much not too little I reckon.
epicgp126

Good idea.

Would this have night combat?  I would not know because I'm new to massive Nerf wars.

EDIT

Please do not double post. Edit your last post if you have more to add. Please read the code of conduct. ON

blindgeekuk

Night combat would be a topic for discussion nearer the time. Few of us, other than the larpers, will have done much Nerf'ing at night
Boff

*rolls in after a GC weekend, exhausted and stinking to high heaven* Don't Nerf after dark unless you really know what you're doing and have the lights to make it work.

As someone who predominantly played at night , THIS! . Am not really around much anymore but torches are your friend if used sensibly and not as a DBAG violation to piss off people.
OldNoob

Night time is for beer and barbecue, end of.
daniel k

Agreed! *smacks gravel*
epicgp126

How old will you have to be to go to this event and if your under 16 do you need parental supervision?
Rab

Most events require under 16's to be accompanied by a parent/guardian, nothing to stop them joining in too.

I have 4 or 5 flash light mounts that we use for LARP so can provide a few
Justajolt

I'd prefer to Nerf in the day. I might try airsoft milsim at some point, but not yet!
OldNoob

epicgp126 wrote:

That is undecided ATM. I would expect NO UNACCOMPANIED under 18's at this event. Bring a parent is the norm. No way I would take responsibility for anyone's kids at an event like this, far too complicated. Tell mum/dad we do decent BBQ and Nerf is awesome exercise.
BaylissLad

A sick event NEAR ME? Finally xD Count me in but I will not be staying over night, if the nerfing is on Saturday I will arrive on Saturday if that is okay Smile And will BBQ be on Friday night or Saturday lunchtime?
old_man_nerf

Update: I've been in touch with a number of potential sites and insurance options to try and see what is possible. I'm still waiting for a reply from most of them. When I get chance/have given them long enough to consider what is proposed I'll chase them up.

Until then can we take a pause on planning who can come, what's going to be played and whether we are having a BBQ or not!

If you want to do something useful drop me a PM and I'll pass on some of the contact details you can help out with the planning......
UK Foam

I'd be interested! What is the date for this?
