BSUK Tech Day: 19th March 17 1000-1600GMT

Location: Trust Hall, Stoke Gifford, Bristol

Announcing the inaugural Blastersmiths UK Tech Day! We want your feedback on our current and upcoming lines and in return we'll have expert advice on hand for your builds plus free pizza (because who doesn't like pizza?) The idea of the day is to bring customers, game organisers and the general community under one NDA free roof. Attendees will have access to a wide variety of BSUK stuff, both production and prototype/development

19th March 2016 - Doors Open: 1000GMT

Venue Address:
Trust Hall,
North Road,
Stoke Gifford,
BS34 8PE

Full size map can be found here

Access:
200 yards from Bristol Parkway, just off Junction 1 of the M32 (Junction 19 of the M4)

Parking:
There is on-site parking at the hall as well as over-flow parking at Bristol Parkway less than 200yds away. Blastersmiths UK is not responsible for loss or damage that results from you using the car park.

Upon arrival:
Please check in at the registration desk and pick up your registration pack

Registration:
The registration form can be found here. Registering is not mandatory but a very good idea. Benefits of registering include the ability to express a pizza preference, a free name tape with your name on it and access to factory seconds for destruction testing (hammers and pizza what more could you want?).

Pizza arrangements:
Around lunch time we will be placing a giant pizza order, based on people's preferences set out in the registration forms. Once it arrives, we will sort the boxes and do some admin before notifying everyone that pizza is available for nomming. Please do not swarm on to the deliciousness until BSUK staff have authorised you to do so. We need to sort the dietary requirements from everything else. We will do this as fast as possible so food doesn't get cold but the process will be quicker if the pizza sorter is not being constantly interrupted.

If you specify a dietary requirement (gluten, nut, potato, Nerf vampire or fire allergy etc) you will find a coloured wrist band in your registration pack. That coloured wrist band will match the giant coloured sticker on the top of the pizza boxes. If you don't have a matching wrist band don't eat from that fucking pizza box! It's common courtesy because while you might be able to eat absolutely everything, there are people who won't be able to so let them have their thing. They're not hoarding or being greedy, they literally will die (or be ill) if they eat from something else so we have to ring fence them. Thank you.

Stalls/Stations:
Chronograph (because it's there)
LiPo Charging Farm (including care guides and maybe even examples of ones that have gone pop)
Film space w/lights and backdrop (for those of you that want to film stuff for respective Youtube channels)
MOLLE Assault Vests Stall (Past and Present)
All the Mirandas of the Rainbow!
Nerf Ballistics and Game Theory
Why We Can't Print In Black Filament (Mystery Game)
Rapidstrike Wiring Loom Demos
Destruction Testing Therapy (eye protection provided)

Various prototype and production item stalls
More to be announced closer to the event

Any questions, drop them below and I'll do what I can to answer them. I might be able to give previews ahead of time, it depends how the next few weeks go. Smile
Franksie

Bah!  Knew this would be a weekend I'm on daddy duties
The Dark Kitten

I have intentions to be there. Will be 16 so that's all good.
I will be getting a coach down so if anyone up north wants to join me that's worth a PM
FDT

Scottish BritNerfers?

Anyone interested?
Treezy

Is this going to be a daytime affair, or will it be run in the evening?
Boff

Times are 1000-1600GMT. Smile I'm currently working on the full post and registration form now.
bigal123

I'm looking at it. Currently best option looks like flying Glasgow to Bristol, cheaper than the train or deisel and a bit quicker than a 10 hr bus, need a few more details to plan it out properly might give you a pm boff if you know any other details like times, venue to airport links?
Boff

The venue is 200 yards from Parkway station so I imagine there's a direct bus link to the Airport (which is on the other side of the city, literally). I'll get the full post done and you guys can work out your logistics.

People coming from Scotland, no pressure, eh? Razz

EDIT: Registration is now open.
bigal123

Booked, looking forward to it Very Happy
Minky

Why make me feel so old by having your date thing start on today's date Boff! Why!

Going for a lie down.
Boff

It's Google's default date, I can't help it!

On the bright side, all these people coming from all over the place is spurring me to get shit done. On the flip side, I'm worried everything is going to catch fire and explode...

EDIT: If you specify a dietary requirement (gluten, nut, potato, Nerf vampire or fire allergy) you will find a coloured wrist band in your registration pack. Thank you. Smile

I'm going to fold the above into the main post.

EDIT #2: I've started listing stalls/tables that we'll have available.
Treezy

Just an idea, and I totally understand if it wouldn't work/wouldn't for the theme of the day, but how about a Bring 'n' Buy stall where people can sell their old blasters, parts, spares etc?

It could just be a simple table where people put anything they want to sell on it; labelled with their name and asking price. Then anyone who wants it just needs to find the seller (handy use of the name tags), and sort the cash with them. This way there's no need for anyone to be manning the stall the whole time: though it'd be best id it's positioned close to another manned stand.

Alternatively, have it all on display with prices for people to look at and have a form where people write down what they want and who from, thus reserving the item(s). Then at the end of the day people go through the list and exhange cash for goods.

Other suggestions on this theme welcomed
Boff

I'll have a chat with the rest of the team and see what they say. I'm a little worried about this turning into an unofficial UK Nerf Convention at this rate... Razz

: D I actually described this as a Nerf Convention when I told my partner about it and I wanted to go along : D
The Dark Kitten

To confirm is it a public event? Or is it exclusive to britnerfers?
To add - the tables sound fab and the whole atmosphere is joining that.
I must say specific efforts are to be made so I can get down. It'd be a shame if I missed it
Zenif

Sounds awesome,

Not really yet (but soon will be) Nerf convention in Bristol sounds awesome. I live very locally and I would be happy to help but I don't have anything worthy of display (long time off yet)!

Don't want to distract too much from all the awesome stalls that will be there but would any of the following be good ideas (obviously depending on people/ space / weather?):

-  Nerf boot sale /swap shop as proposed by Treezy!
-  Shooting range
-  Mini Nerf war/ demonstrations!

Perhaps run some competitions and fund raising for prizes and a local charity?
-  Best shot / worst shot
-  Best / worst mod
-  Best / worst dressed nerfer / best zombie Wink
-  Nerf based cake sale (wife is a great baker for charity and hell who doesn't love cake)!

Shame it is over 16's only but I understand why, kids will be so gutted as they love it when I open up a gun!
The Dark Kitten

Im very up for making a tonne of Nerf themed cakes and biscuits. Ill even ice them up and ma,e them look pretty.
It's nice too see the community going crazy over all of this!
Just a quick question, what rules are in place for open carry  Very Happy and the bring I of BSUK goods. There always may be confusion of who owns what.
Boff

OK, folks just to say I appreciate the enthusiasm. Keep flinging ideas at us and I'll take them to the rest of the team and see what works. Bear in mind, the idea for this event is to focus on BSUK stuff and how we can do better. We do a lot of development work behind the scenes but we're looking to get more people involved in that because we're very, very aware that the way we play is not the way everyone plays.

I can say that we won't be running miniature wars during the event. There is a large park area outside so if people want to go outside and run around and do informal stuff then fair enough. However, I will stress that it's a public park so you don't want to be toting around dark coloured blasters or leaving a shit tonne of spent darts around. We want to be on good terms with this venue because I see a strong future for using it for further events.

Yes, this event is technically public. Right now, I'm advertising to BritNerfers and I've been in contact with a few other groups. If you want to bring friends down then fine but remember, we're doing a Tech Day (and a little bit of a mod party) and not a Nerf war.

Given the enthusiasm and ideas presented here, I have brought forward my plans for a UK Nerf convention BUT we need to get Battle of BritNerf out of the way first in 2017. Only with that sort of united event can we lay the ground work for something bigger. Plus, I need to sort some other stuff here with the business and on a personal level before we go anywhere with that. Right now, I want to get the Tech Day done so we have development material to work with for the next 12-18 months and make continue to make awesome gear. Then we'll get to our secondary cause of growing the community through events and stuff.

Finally, open carry is encouraged at the event. We won't just be displaying our products but also our design philosophy. Just because you're wandering around with duct tape in Cordura Paradise(tm) doesn't mean you won't be able to learn a thing or two. Smile
Minky

FYI -  if National Rail says there isn't a train running,  when you heavily suspect there is, fight with it, and wrestle it into submission by changing arriving or departing options until you get the answer you need.
Boff

Kabump! So we're hard at work putting together prototypes and organising stands for this. I might post sneak peaks here if I get time. I'm also embroidering the first run of names tapes this afternoon be sure to register so we can get yours made up. Smile
Minky

Payday tomorrow. Booking the train. Choo-wooo!
Boff

Kabump!

We're just over a month out now and I'm starting to get things together. Hopefully. Very Happy This is a gentle reminder for people to bring as much of their own gear as possible. Any and all feedback will be helpful. The team will be on hand to answer any questions and help you get the most from your kit.

EDIT:

Kabump! We're less than 2 weeks out now. We're finalising a bunch of stuff and generally running around on fire. We'll have a bunch of our in-house tools to hand (press punches etc) plus a soldering station for things.

We'd appreciate it if people could bring their own gear - whether BSUK or not - so we can get together and have a proper development day. We won't just be looking at shinies but games, organisation skills and general stuff that comes out when you put a bunch of Nerfers under the same roof. Very Happy

EDIT #2:

Final prep is under way now. If anyone has a Khaos magazine they can bring along with them, I'd be grateful. For, er, reasons...
The Dark Kitten

I can confirm that I will be at this so long as public transport doesn't fuck me over.
I'm looking forward to seeing you lot there

EDIT : Or not ticket times shifted since I last checked and actually it's nasty and unhelpful
Zenif

Looking forward to this, hopefully I can sneak over at some point without the kids finding out!..

...'but mum why is dad packing Nerf stuff in the car..!'

Guess most of us will be there around lunch for pizza, also looking forward to looking at all the new nifty stuff, RS rewire and breaking/shooting stuff!

So yea the whole thing really!

Is there an agenda/ plan for the day's main events?
Minky

Zenif you just managed to scare the crap out of me. Tech day is the day After BB which allows you to be lazy and leave it in the kit in the car! Smile
Boff

No plan, just rock up and say hello. Pizza will be sometime after noon or whenever Spud gets hungry which could be whenever. Smile
Zenif

Oops! Yea sorry for some reason I thought BB was sunday!
UKNerfWar

Head Office has given me the green light!

I'll leaving from Bexley early Sunday morning and picking up Nerf shack in Bracknell. There's two spare seats in the car if anybody wants one and is willing to split petrol.
Boff

Just printed the labels for the registration packs. Need to remember to pack the hammer and safety goggles for destruction testing.

Oh god, it's actually happening!

EDIT: Side note: Nerfers are a carnivorous lot... Very Happy
OldNoob

Don't forget I want extra Vegan on my pizza...

On the train, should be there about 11:40. Note to self: Avoid stares by getting a hold all. Your blaster is too bootilicious.
bigal123

Running late but finally on my way, should be there after 11.
Minky

I know it was a 'give and take' thing but I still would like to thank BSUK for putting this on. It was great meeting you all and interesting in seeing all your wares and just chatting. Apologies to the guys trying to film vids whilst I continuously spooled up my blaster in the background. Mike n co let me know if you find my nametag.. I lost my goodie bag somewhere and that was cool.

Thanks again!
UK Foam

Thanks for today! Look forward to another Wink
OldNoob

Shooting is all part of the fun!
I not only got a goodie bag and had a great day talking to you all but I also got a "Worker Stafan Tattoo."

Tattooist was 30 ft away and that's today, a while after the tattoo was applied!
UKNerfWar

Was it just me or was OldNoob extra talkative yesterday?

So yea, it was well worth the drive over. Good to see some of the super secret stuff BSUK has waiting in the wings and using my car to test your products was a hoot. There was less of a 'mod party' element than I was expecting but it was great to see some old faces and meet some new ones.

Here's to the next one!
Boff

OldNoob is always like that. It's fine. Thanks to everyone who came along, it was nice to run an event again even if we did opt for 'easy' mode. Smile I've got a notebook jammed full of stuff to work on and I'm letting my brain churn through some of.

UKNW, please tell me you can get that video onto Youtube at some point? Very Happy

It's on your camera as far as I'm aware. It needs to be edited with suitably dramatic music.
