Davidov's Saturday Skirmish!

HENDON Nerf WAR

Privet Comrades!
If you would allow me to announce what I would like to be the first of many Nerf skirmishes here is the open invite to you all, though let me know so everyone can see if we have enough for a war and not a trip to the pub.
https://www.facebook.com/events/174333266270343/

Date & time
Saturday 9th April 11am-4pm

Location
The war will be located in Sunny Hill park in Hendon, north west London, meeting near the main entrance carpark, pass the café to find the Nerf types opposite, near the tennis courts. Once people are gathered we will be using a few different spots for games.

The parks café website, with maps etc is http://www.sunnyhillcafe.co.uk/# this is the nearest source of lunch but there are lots of shops, pubs and takeaways by the other park exits.

Those travelling by London underground have a short walk to the park where they can take note of which pub/takeaway looks like their favourite option, busses have a choice of Hendon central or directly outside some of the park exits depending on which direction they are coming from.

Games
Death matches to get us warmed up, team/individual/one shots followed by a mix of the below as time permits

Supply drop
Teams fight over several crates across the battlefield and return them to their respective bases

Assault
One team defends, one team assaults, then switch.

Defend and destroy
Both teams defend their own base while attempting to hit 3 targets in the opponents base.

Mixed Melee skirmish (if equipment permits)
Team skirmishing with a mix of Nerf and safe foam weaponry, either larp kit or the foam training weapons that I will have a small number on hand as loaners, all subject to weapon check.

Safety & Behaviour
1- Blasters to be in original or brightly coloured schemes, nothing to alarm other park users, performance will be on an individual basis. I won’t be slowing things down to chrono so if you’re primary is modded and there is any chance it might be judged as over powered make sure you have a backup on hand.

2- Darts, anything that isn’t Nerf brand or koosh will be decided on an individual basis, as a rule of thumb anything without compression will be a no, so no Full vinyl jackets or nipples etc.

3- As per the guide by UKNerfWar eye protection required, anyone under 18 needs parental permission, under 16 a chaperone. And above all else, don’t be a dick.
UKNerfWar

I'll be there.

Are Russian accents mandatory?
n_g

I'm in and I'll see if I can interest my 3 mates.
haloxxbilly

I should be able to come and i don't think i have anything on that day.
Baldrick

Count me in, just got to work out what blasters to bring (and how much ammo).
Davidov

Glad to hear a strong start to things, also UKNerfWar - I might have to get my Rossi hat and do the entire thing that way, da. Though I have a habit of losing the hat frequently now I don't wear it as much so it's a coin toss on if it's there at the time.
super gripper

Definitely interested in coming alone to this one. Would be able to bring modified stryfes with me should anyone wish to order one.
North257

yeyyyy! this isn't to far for me to travel so I'm all over this Smile
haloxxbilly

Looked at calendar. Should be able to come if nothing random pops up.
Justajolt

I have family in London who I'll be visiting around then. In principle, this sounds superb!

Спасибо for the hard work and I'll let you know for certain nearer the time...
Elime_rawne

I wonder how many other Londoners will come out of the woodwork... Smile

Not overly familiar with Hendon (or its parks) but this sounds fun
FDT

Sounds awesome - hope it goes well Smile
jja

this sounds great, and not to far for me. I'm in if this goes ahead. I  will also see if i can bring some other people.
dabrad89

I have family in hendon perfect excuse !
Dustybin

I'm coming, just wondering but do you have community darts or do we just bring our own darts
UKNerfWar

It's a BYO event so there won't be a pool as such. Expect to loose a few aswell since we're playing outdoors.
Davidov

Thank's for fielding that one while I was away, BYO as UKNerfWar just said, the stash of darts I did have have ended up donated to the kit box of a Nerf Larp I go to so I need to hit the shops before I even have any for myself at the moment.
haloxxbilly

My pile of elites might have a couple FVJS. Is that ok? I mean if any of us saw it on the field we could just leave it on the side for the rest of the game.
Boff

haloxxbilly wrote:
Is that ok?

No, the organiser has explicitly banned FVJs. It is your responsibility to ensure that your darts and equipment comply with the standards of the event you are attending before you turn up. If that means you need to grow a pair and sort through a couple of thousand darts for potential rouge darts or power down your flywheel monster to something tamer then so be it.

Speaking as the usual on-site first aider, I'd rather that than have to deal with an FVJ lofted at 130FPS in a system that doesn't mandate eye protection because you couldn't be arsed.
haloxxbilly

I have gone through them a few times but i am just saying there might be a rogue one or two and i was wondered if they were ok but ill just look out for them when loading my clips/mags instead.
Davidov

As Boff said. Safety is one thing that we can't accept maybe's on and FVJs are on that list of risks, doubly so as this is a public event, in a public place, if someone else picks up that dart and it flys off and blinds a passing escaped child that person could be in a lot of trouble because of somebody else bringing something dangerous. That and I'm fairly sure we would never be welcomed back and I train and run groups for other stuff out there frequently so could do without.

The be all and end all here is if you aren't confident there are none in there, and that includes any other darts that have non compressing tips, FVJ's were only one example, then I can't be and the other players can't be.

I'll be bugging Boff for a better list of yay's and ney's on the dart front shortly I think.
haloxxbilly

Mkay, i understand. Whats the (rough) Fps limit?
Davidov

I'll be checking by eye and comparing to what I'm familiar with at 130fps realisticly speaking that probably means anything between 110-140 will probably see me umming and arring and shooting the owners in the chest.
OldNoob

I would just say niet to all solid tip vinyls and darts over 1.2g and a 130fps cap average.
Unless you have a very good 14kg Longshot, brass breech 7-10kg elite DP or a very serious flywheeler, like reaper spec with Worker flywheels or a well set up and barrelled air gun, you are not going to top that limit.
Mandate eye pro for players, be clear on play/no play areas and try and find a corner with relatively low traffic.
Davidov

Thank's OldNoob, all covered in the original post from the start, I'm only after Boff for a specific brand list in case it assist's players who aren't sure what counts as solid tipped. I was amazed at GC at the number of players who can't tell the difference after being told a dozen times and I'm sure I've seen other's on here say similar.

*Edit*

I will take a look at the maximum weight part as well as it's not something I mentioned.
Boff

I'll see if I can get you a regimental command dart reference before the event. If you're happy to use GC standards then I can just loan you one of the new printed reference cards that contains samples of legal and illegal darts in a handy, easy to use format. You can just give it hand it over to one of the regimental commands at E1. Smile
Davidov

I will be using GC standards.

Also I'm asking to get on the cleared list to check larp weapons and darts for this years event's anyway so I might as well learn just the one set of rules.
Boff

If you want blaster safety training then come see me at E1. I'm working on assembling a full team so I'd be happy to have you on board. Smile I'll be getting the dart reference parts put together in the next couple of week so I'll send it when done. GC standards are pretty sane for most wars.

Though, personally, if I were to run my own I'd enforce eye protection, knock the velocity limit to 170FPS and allow FVJs but I'm a masochistic son of a bitch. Very Happy
haloxxbilly

180 2s stryfe normal flywheels will be just ok then?
Justajolt

How many people roughly do you think you'll have??
old_man_nerf

Going on our experience that's one of those 'how long is a piece of string?' questions.....
Justajolt

Ha! True true..
Boff

haloxxbilly wrote:
180 2s stryfe normal flywheels will be just ok then?

They top out around 110-115FPS so yes, you'll be fine if you're firing Koosh. Smile Frankly 180s aren't all they're hyped to be; the Rhino 130 does pretty much everything they do but in a smaller, easier to come by package. *ducks before getting broadsided by ON* Razz
haloxxbilly

I only got the 180s is because I had a 2s lipo that needed usin +they were cheaper than rhinos
OldNoob

Boff is just jelly because he can't get his 180's kicking properly.
Wait until you see some worker figures. Also on matched stock flywheels they shoot mid 120's on Elites. Still not going to be over the advised limit for this event. There are very few people who own a full auto or indeed any flywheeler that can top 130 average. That means Davidov can let everyone with flywheels play, no matter how noisy the motors etc are.
Dart identification from EBay/Amazon listings is the work of the forces of darkness, with much scrying, arcane rituals and casting of the runes, usually resulting in you receiving FVJ. That is why I stick to BW12 Koosh.
Boff

180s are a faff and given that the 130FPS cap appears to be creeping out as a standard, Rhinos with Worker flywheels shoot 128FPS so you're maxed out there really. Razz

Yutoys and BW21012 are the go-to sellers. I maintain a list of approved suppliers here.
dabrad89

would a Nerf lightsaber be an appropriate mele weapon?

http://www.toysrus.co.uk/toys/sta...ywalker-lightsaber/TRUP8929150001
Baldrick

The Nerf lightsaber is highly unlikely to be passed as usable at this war.  The 'soft foam' that it is made from is likely to be the same foam that the weapons sold by Perpetual Play are made from, and they are far harder than will be allowed.  The weapons that will be allowed are larp safe weapons and the soft foam covered martial arts training weapons (all to be checked on the day) as they are known to be safe, and are what the organiser has experience with.
nerfshack

I am in for this. Will anybody be bringing a chronograph?
UKNerfWar

Probably not. I think we'll be fine assessing each blaster on it's own without a chrony. Any OP blasters should be obvious.

Somehow I don't think your asking the question on safety grounds.  Laughing
Davidov

Nope, there will be no chrono unless someone elects themselves to arrive early and run checks, if in doubt bring a safe back up.
nerfshack

I'm not lol I guess I should purchase one really
Davidov

I'm normally in charge of the bar at events if anything, not the chrono checks :p

I'll grab a cheap one for when no one else brings one along eventually.
Dustybin

Quick question, are we allowed tactual socks? I might run with just a bunch of socks for a round or 2.
Davidov

Possibly be included in some rounds, I'll probably ask on the day who has what and make the call there and then.
Dustybin

Just ordered a buzz bee sentinel (it's called the ultra rapid tek) so that should be fun.
Justajolt

Can you recommend any car parking near by?
Davidov

You read my mind.

All parking listed below is free, though there are parking machines in most of the surrounding roads if you want to use them, as far as the free parking in the park and right next to where we kick off

- parking area has been a warzone over the easter hols so precautions and countermeasures to follow;

1-If you can arrive a bit earlier you have a better chance to fight for parking inside the park and close to where we want to get started.

2- If you arrive and are out of luck then the Copthall playing fields offer lots more parking a few minutes walk away, get back to five ways corner (the lights just before the park entrance, and take the only other road available, copthall is then on the left imediately after kwikfit. All along their internal roads and in the swimming pool car park (check if it needs a ticket, I am unsure, but the playing fields roads are all free and used for parking)

3-If all else fails, panic / the very worst case brent cross shopping centre and thousands of car parking spaces is a 4 minute bus journey from the park via either a 143 and getting off at the quad in front of the university, or the 186 getting off at greyhound hill at the other end of the road the university is on. I only include this as a hypothetical worst case scenario, even if park is full I would still be amazed if the playing fields were too.
dabrad89

What are we counting as arriving early ? im trying to organise timings for my trip from Peterborough with the wife and kids.
super gripper

ok, not going to be making this one now. Like I put on facetube it being in London on a Saturday and in half term it will be stupid busy and I won't get to park on site. (too much to carry parking anywhere else)
I work in London so I know what the traffic is like.

Have to find an event that's not in London ........... and close to me obviously.
haloxxbilly

How many people are attending this war?
Elime_rawne

Davidov, might be worthwhile (given the forcast) to remind everyone to bring a springer in case of light rain Smile
haloxxbilly

I trust my stryfe to battle through the rain....

*ZAP*
Davidov

As we've got this split between here and fb, show of hands to anyone here who is going but has not ticked going on fb?

Also the parking is largely me over planning hopefully, and light rain will probably remove any need to worry about it, the sudden strong sun in the middle of easter hols meant that the saturday just gone had a sudden rush so I thought better to post than not.

Reminder - bring springers if you are worried about the rain!

*By early I was thinking twenty minutes or so as you'll either get a spot or have enough time to turn around, park in copthall and be back without having to walk quickly.
Boff

Note: I've operated LiPo powered blasters in moderate rain for a couple of hours without incident. A proper build doesn't need to worry. Smile
dabrad89

Im planning on attending but have not visited the FB site
jja

My self and two friends are attending, all of us have clicked "going" on FB.
Dustybin

I am attending with my dad but we don't have a fb account, my dad probably will not be in all rounds.
Justajolt

I'm coming, along with wife, baby, cousin and partner.

I 'deleted' my Facebook account a year or so ago, so have not clicked.

Both springers and flywheels packed and already out camping with us ^_^
dabrad89

How many wives and babies are attending ... i have a nearly 3 year old and a 1 month old -  was planning on sending them across to brent cross if they're board watching ?
Justajolt

Was planning on using my baby as a meatshield and dart collector...
UKNerfWar

Justajolt wrote:

I considered this once but babies tend to have a very small surface area. Perhaps training them to be an ammo mule would be more effective. Having them run at the enemy screaming could also be an effective tactic. I know Boff is terrified of children so I've already started training mine for Bristol.
blindgeekuk

Justajolt's daughter is cool, takes a hit with ease, grabs ammo like a demon, and appears out of nowhere!

In case I don't get chance to say it before Saturday, I hope you all have a blast, and I hope the rain stays away for you all!
Justajolt

I hope so too! With a bit of luck it should hold out. It's been mostly dry on the south coast where we've been staying.

And yeah. She's great! Imagine an army of minions who would fight for Cheerios or cheese!
Davidov

I hope we get just enough light rain to keep other people out of the park :p

So given the fb numbers and the above we have about 17.

Also there is a good size children's playground, tennis courts, cafe and usual park areas on hand if they don't get bored enough to head to brent cross but want to amuse themselves.

Also at Larps they send the ankle biters at unsuspecting big bads as at things like Curious Pastimes the kids are invulnerable but still get proper stats :p
Justajolt

That's phenomenal! I like that. Picturing s room full of adults running away from a toddler with a foam sword!
FDT

Have a fantastic time guys Smile
Davidov

Thanks Comrade!

See you people tomorrow, armed and ready!
Dustybin

This better be worth it, you made me sit down, play classical music and mark 200 or so darts!
haloxxbilly

Of course my stryfe has to break RIGHT before we leave for the war....
Davidov

At least the sun has come out :p that should help me live up to the classical music.
dabrad89

Awesome day thanks for organising Davidov ! Good to meet you all and give the gear a run out
jja

thank you for organizing... a great day, tons of fun. great to meet everyone.
Davidov

And now that I'm back from seeing the last few off to the station;

A big thank you to all who attended as I have it on good authority that that was the largest UK Nerf gathering apart from one heavily linked to a university society and thus bolstered by their numbers.

The weather couldn't have been better and it was great to test out the play areas and have a run around in the sun after the initial rain that kept the car park relatively empty for us. The reception from other park goers seemed positive and I can't see any reason not to run another in the future with upgraded kit for game's (I've got portable sand bag walls and things in the works for Nerf Larps as well as other bits).

I need to eat and sleep, after that I'll put together a legible post event post.
blindgeekuk

How many did you have in the end.

Grim Up Nerf 2 was 27 people I think. Last night's youth club event was 60+
Davidov

20 - I'm talking event's that have pulled players purely from the Britnerf Forum here, I should have been more specific.
blindgeekuk

Lol, that makes more sense

I should apologise as well, my reply could have come across as boasting. It wasn't mean to, Grim Up Nerf wouldn't be what it is without the support of the forum.

20 forum members was a very good number, I think the most we've had is 5 members at a time
Davidov

Nope, no worries, remember I'm a Nerf Larper, who runs a bar at a Larp, Larper's are made of drama so I usually won't assumer aggro online :p
haloxxbilly

Loved it today, thanks Davidov
Justajolt

I second all of the above posts.

That was a great event. It was fantastic to put names to faces and see all of the gear being used!

Rainbow pistols using chopped up koosh darts, 15kg pump Longshots, a loadout including (I think I counted right) 18x18 dart strip mags plus two in blasters, duct tape mag holders (gotta love that shiny grey tape), a beautiful blue Hammershot and the list goes on.

It was also nice to meet parents who kindly provided transport and supported by watching kit whilst we were playing, and other Nerfers' kids. Jja's daughter and mine enjoyed looking at each other for a few moments before they went!

Well organised, Davidov. Rest and classical music well deserved (speaking of classical music, my drive home was as safe as everyone wished until the William Tell Overture started playing through the radio... not music to drive sensibly by!) The fact that there's another Nerf event next week to go to makes up for the fact that we were greeted by rain and cold at the end of our journey.
dabrad89

After being out Nite findered I need to go back to the drawing board and source a better spring!

Blaster Smith's parts all worked beautifully for me inc eat spring+plate and quick release sling thanks guys.

Can't wait for the next one!

You do know it's grim up here, right?

Sounds great - justajolt only came along to steal, I mean borrow, all your best ideas, so we are expecting some fantastic event planning from him in the next week or so! Smile
haloxxbilly

Out nite finder'd with less springs. Very Happy
n_g

Thank you to Davidov for organizing a great event it was a lot fun.
UKNerfWar

Awesome event. Just awesome.

Great to see so many forum members there and a few lurkers who assured me they will sign up soon. A good mixture of old faces and new and some good banter with our northern interloper.

There was a good selection of game types and although there was often a little confusion over rules (there always is), I think Davidov did a standup job of keeping the day running smoothly.

Today was my first chance to try a super light load out, running with only a Swarmfire and a pocket full of darts and I couldn't be happier. This is my new favourite setup as it makes me feel a little more nimble. The Swarmy was a beast but it needs a touch more love before it can be amazing.

Massive thanks to everyone who came, the parents who were kind enough to chaperone and mind the bags but especially Davidov. Thanks a lot buddy.
Davidov

Many many thanks for all the kind words in fead back post event. I'm won't impose even more and go make a post event topic to ask about game types for next time as I'm sure it will eb time soon for a general continuation of that for everyone running wars.

So as my own post-event-post let me just repeat my thanks to everyone who attended and say I hope to see even more people next time, which will be a little while in the making as I have the Nerf-larp commitments, but should be able to run several over the school holidays and beyond, making use of the kit being made for the larpy side of things while we are at it.

-=-=-=-

I'm also noting the comment on rules as they were clear in my head but I'm sure a cheat sheet and practice ahead of time would have made it a lot easier to get people up to speed without going over them multiple times to fill gaps. (That and we changed a few on the fly to work with who/what we had, the experienced nerfy types who could offer experience on game balance and respawn timings, etc, were invaluable)
old_man_nerf

I wouldn't worry about that - we make up or change the rules at Grim up Nerf on the fly too. Planning is great, but flexibility is greater Smile
Justajolt

The best plans have a bit of flex. I just enjoyed running around flinging foam! Still proud of my briefcase dashes!
Davidov

I do like the supply drop even if we only did it for about 30 to 40 minutes, I'll be using many variations of that idea in future I'm sure.

And that upgraded target base with rotating targets and strobe lights of course.
FDT

Well done all - sounds fantastic!

QQ: what's the Supply Drop? I am intrigued....
Davidov

In short

-A few boxes around the play area, the first team to get all boxes back to their own base, or to have the most after 15 minutes wins.

I liked the version with two different kinds of boxes, with each team after the ones closest the the other base. As you can't touch the boxes the other team want you can only shoot anyone who grabs them then defend them where they fall.
FDT

That sounds cracking - I'll have a think about how I can use that in our skate park wars - thanks for sharing Smile
dabrad89

We need another one of these!

Thread necro'd
Davidov

I concur. I had wanted to run two more by now Sad

The bar (and me) have been busy over summer, with next month my busiest by a good margin, I'll throw pics up in the off topic section of the highlights as they should be good.

If possible I'll run something on the 10th/11th of September as they're my only days available between now and mid October.

In the mean time two of those events that are taking my time next month are Nerf-Larps, the top two on my calendar even.

http://davidovs.com/calendar.html
Andrew_Aitchison

is 9th April right? like in 9 months?!
Davidov

That was April earlier this year, dabrad was putting vote in for another as we had a good turn out and a nice day of it but I've not worked the Nerf around the rest of life since.
Justajolt

It was amazing, but yeah. It's hard balancing it all. I feel ya  Wink
aKindlyBeast

Guys myself and three others (three adults and one ammo gretchin) are all London based and ready for a game.... Is September 10th looking likely?

Anyone interested in a pre september game aswell? I'm not particularly au fait with what would constitute a decent venue...

Out of interest what is a decent springer? I currently have a modulus and a longshot, so would a decent pistol be a logical addition?

I am happy to assist with any admin to help getting a game out the door...
UKNerfWar

I hope to run one towards the end of August/early September in Bexley so keep an eye out for that thread. Things are pretty mental at the moment as we head towards the end of the LARP season so you'll have to bare with us.

aKindlyBeast wrote:

This is a topic for a separate discussion. Feel free to start a thread in the Q&A forum or have a search through the other similar threads.
Andrew_Aitchison

I'm close to London and very keen for ner wars!!!
