Grim Up Nerf 2, Sat 13th Feb, 1-4pm, Tong, Bradford

Grim Up Nerf

We've got a bigger building, more rooms, more darts, more cover and more game types planned!
This is an open invite to you all for the second Grim Up Nerf event. North, South, Northerer than North (Thatís you, FDT!)... all are invited.

Date and Time
Saturday 13th February 13:00 - 16:00

Location
The war will be located at the Church of the Latter-Day Saints chapel, at 21 Toftshaw Ln, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD4 6RB
If youíre travelling by public transport, we can pick you up from Bradford Interchange. Justajolt will be running a shuttle service between there and the venue at 12:30. Send him a PM for more info and to arrange pickup and deployment into the combat zone. Otherwise, the venue is on the 425 and 427 Arriva West Yorkshire bus route.

Cost
All attendees are invited to contribute the princely sum of £1 towards darts, materials etc so that we can keep doing it!
Please feel free to bring something to contribute to a communal snack bar. There is a small retail park a few minutes walk away, complete with KFC if more substantial food is required. Additionally, some of Bradfordís finest takeaways are also near by (Tong Fried Chicken! Finger lickiní †goodness to make the colonel himself jealous and at half the price!)

Games
We will be playing deathmatches to get us warmed up, followed by speed zombie rounds and a mix of team/individual/one shots/objectives as time permits. Game rules will be explained before each round.

Safety and Behaviour
1 - We expect blasters to be in original or brightly coloured schemes, with an ornge tip. I.e. nothing (weapon or clothing) to alarm the locals or other building users. We wonít be slowing down to assess performance so if youíre primary is modded and there is any chance it might be judged as over powered make sure you have a backup on hand.
2 - We will be providing all Koosh darts to be used at the event. If your blaster requires a different dart type, such as discs, mega darts, or missiles, you are expected to provide these yourself. No FVJ's are allowed.
3 - Eye protection is required and some will be provided, glasses users do so at their own risk.
4 - Anyone under 18 requires parental permission, and under 16's require a chaperone. Consider it an excuse to get your dad or mum playing.
5 - Between games you are expected to help recover and reload darts. Weapons must be holstered, slung, or placed on tables in an unloaded state between games.
6 - If it's not your's, don't touch it without asking
7 - Any abusive, threatening or rascist behaviour won't be tolerated.
8 - By attending, we consider this acceptance of the above rules, and your acknowledgement that Nerfing is not without risk, and that you are playing under your own will, and will not hold anyone else liable for any injuries that occur.
9 - And above all else, it's only a game, have fun, and donít be a silly billy!

Edit: we opted to use Davidov's much better announcement format!
OldNoob

Email for donations? PM it to me.
FDT

Would you take a donation of brand new Gen 3 Koosh? I've just taken in 700 new - happy to send some on if that helps the cause?
old_man_nerf

I'll say we'll take any offer of assistance at the moment in whatever form it takes. Much appreciated.

We'll be in touch via PM.
UKNerfWar

I'm going to make a big effort to come to this one.

Any nerfers in the South East fancy a road trip?
blindgeekuk

You'd be very welcome!

Though that one hell of a drive, and i'd probably be inclined to say 'give us time to figure out this venue and what games we can run in it' before its worth the more pro uk nerfers joining us and teaching us how it's really done!
old_man_nerf

I'll echo that - happy to have people attend but don't come expecting a FDT level of professionalism just yet Smile

What we can say is it will be fun!
Northwind

Let us know when you're feeling ready to really strut your stuff, bradford's not that far from edinburgh and I can throw in some biking while I'm down.
Davidov

UKNW

I was going to jump on that road trip, then I saw the journey time :'(

Will have to keep an eye out for one on a date I'm not semi-doublebooked as that's well past when I could run elsewhere after :p

Ha! I'm flattered, but you haven't met me yet so you can be forgiven for making such a wild accusation.

Fair enough. I won't cramp your style on this one but I'll come to another one soon. I make that trip up North fairly regularly so the miles don't scare me.
blindgeekuk

Attendance so far:

oldmannerf + son
justajolt
OldNoob

I would hesitate to describe Kev or myself as "pro nerfers" more like "Pro crastinators!"
Glad to see its coming together for the next one.
A reminder that vast sums on obstacle expenditure can be saved by visiting local wholesale warehouses and getting their cardboard boxes for free. Get the same size and you can make great box forts, plus if anyone falls on them they helpfully absorb the persons kinetic energy and once life expired they can be recycled. I just fold the box flaps alternately short long short long then put two 6" lengths of tape each end. It takes about 20-30mins to put up 40 boxes. With each being about 75cm square thats a lot of hiding places!
blindgeekuk

We used camo nets drapped over tables and chair stacks at the last event, which worked well. Old_man_nerf has used cardboard boxes before, and i've saved a few big ones from christmas in case we need them

As for 'pro nerfers', you've certainly more experience at running events and playing in them than we have. but we'll soon catch up, we'll improve our tactics and reload techniques and soon be able to compete with you soft southerners... Smile

Shots fired.
OldNoob

We will have to have a North Vs South invitational at the end of the year.
If you keep going you are going to be the only regular mixed group of hobby Nerf in the country. We only get to play seriously a couple of times a year. My full rig got used twice last year.
London needs to get its act together as does Birmingham/Midlands, the south coast and non uni Bristol. There are literally hundreds of potential regular players in all those places but without a regular game no community develops.
If anyone reading this is in those areas, look at how these guys have done it and repeat it in your local area.
blindgeekuk

Hint to others: To get this going, I took the hit on getting a venue and some food sorted, and then Old_man_nerf and justajolt stepped up with ideas and venues... but its worth it!

They can shoot all they want. The South is home to the best in the country, hands down. And I'm happy to prove it. Razz

On a helpful note, I might be able to throw some darts and loaner equipment your way. If this becomes a regular thing there's also the option of branded embroidered merchandise like holsters and slings.

wouldn't it need to be a South vs North vs 'So far north they speak funny and drink girders...' Smile

Just sayin', some of us are southern by birth, living in self imposed exile. Divided loyalties and all that......
Northwind

blindgeekuk wrote:

It's a matter of perspective, you all look pretty southern from here...
Justajolt

I think we could just resolve the dispute by saying that Yorkshire lads'll 'ave the lot 'a ya, up int' norf or daan saaf.
FDT

I'm actually thinking those of us North of the border could amass quite a clan....
The Dark Kitten

Ill have to see how the weeks play out before i confirm but by the looks of it ill make it agian
blindgeekuk

We need you to add that level of youthful energy that us old blokes don't have...

Did you manage to get any decent footage from last weeks games?
The Dark Kitten

Sadly not i haven't had time.

I've just been able to sit down now to edit some footage... after downloading Movie maker which is going to take an hour at least. YAY !

From the raw footage I've looked over it looks OKish it looks a little pixly so a bit of fiddling is due.
Ill post it when I've finished on the post report
Justajolt

5 more people I know confirmed.
blindgeekuk

I've invited my friends, but so far, none of them have confirmed they will come Sad

Do any of your friends need loaners Justajolt?

Edit: have pm'd all the obvious forum members with a nearby (York, Manchester, Leeds, durham) location listed on their profile, though a lot of them look to be inactive nowadays.
Justajolt

I've got some blasters they'll be able to borrow, but a couple of loaners for other blasterless attendees wouldn't go amiss...
blindgeekuk

OK, personal bag for me and son packed:
Demolisher, eat, 2* Hammershot, triad, firestrike, sledgefire

Loaner boxes:
Box 1 - pistols: 4* strongarm, spectre, maverick, 4victory, 4 jolt, Rebelle firestrike, reflex

Box 2: 2 * retaliator, guardian crossbow, Doominator, raider, rampage, barrel break, slingfire, flipfury, stockade, elite cam, fearless fire, stampede, roughcut

Bunged the Rebelle stuff in because an old colleague has said he might come with his daughter

Edit: forgot the stampede... also considering bringing the vulcan for shits and giggles. Also finally got some decent performance out of the elite cam... cleaned dart residue off the flywheels!

Sneak Peak 1:
New beacons for team respawn points

Grim Up Nerf beacons video
Justajolt

Wow! This is getting high tech!
blindgeekuk

Sneak Peek 2

Is anyone asthmatic?

Grim Up Nerf smoke machine
The Dark Kitten

Woah!

What would it be used for?
blindgeekuk

Well, it produces produces nice thick fog quickly, that then drifts and dissipates fairly quickly. I was thinking it can be used to alter the dynamics of the main room during a deathmatch game - you can't shoot what you can't see
OldNoob

I have used smoke machines at my games many times. They are great fun for HvZ and added atmosphere. Watch out for asthmatics with your fluid though, some types can be very irritating to their condition.
blindgeekuk

Sneak Peek 3:

Thanks to a donation from OldNoob, we've got more camo nets which means more cover!

Seiryuu

So which day is this and what time should I be meeting people at the station?
blindgeekuk

This Saturday, not sure about lifts, but probably aim to be at bradford interchange at 12:30ish
Justajolt

I'll get people from the station! I agree, be there around 1230ish and I'll come and pick you up. Let me know whether you'll be coming into the Station by the bus station or the other one!
Justajolt

The Russian standard! Wink
Davidov

Woohoo!

Though in turn I just went straight from the guide to running Nerf wars by UKNerfWar
Justajolt

Gotta say, it's like there's a critical mass of Nerf-activity building in 2016... We're bringing Nerf to the Nation (Copyright justajolt 2016 cos it's so catchy)

I'll be coming in via bus due to being stingy, arriving at "Bradford City Centre, Interchange, Stand 3" according to the online guide.

You're catching a coach rather than a bus?

X6 and the 72 take about the same amount of time, and are probably cheaper

Should be a simple case of down the stairs to your left as you arrive, across the foyer, and into the car park
Justajolt

Yep. Down the stairs and to the left is where the car park is! I'll make sure there's room for kit. Anyone else??
blindgeekuk

Sneak Peek 4

Nice new darts, thanks to FDT and OldNoob

Seiryuu

blindgeekuk wrote:

If I am then I'm not exactly happy with metro's bus journey planner. X6 supposedly gets in at 12:34 if that's still ok.
Justajolt

Perfect!
FDT

Damn. If I'd known ON was also contributing darts we could have agreed on a a colour for you!
blindgeekuk

He donated money. Managed to squeeze a camo net for cover, and some darts out of the donation. The 3 colours means I can do a (hate to say this) coop772 style tracer clip finisher, where the last couple of rounds are differently coloured.
FDT

Can't wait to see the pics/vids Smile
Boff

blindgeekuk wrote:

That trick is as old as the N-Strike Rayven - I've been using it since 2011 so don't feel bad. Razz
Justajolt

Gotta love the Rayven! I love running the Green Machines...
blindgeekuk

A quick heads up before the event...

We'll be providing koosh darts for all standard blasters, safety goggles, and loaner blasters. However, we have a limited number of clips available, so if you have spare clips that can be used in loaners, please bring them.
old_man_nerf

My battle belt arrived yesterday (thanks Boff!) so I need at least 6 mags in it to look like a proper 'operator' Smile will bring any spares I have left over.
Justajolt

C'mon... proper operators use belts made of duct tape †Embarassed

I'm also bringing some loaner mags and drums. Some form of labeling is is order...
old_man_nerf

Tried building some duct tape mag pouches for my son last night - with mixed results! I keep telling him it'll get easier to pull the magazines out with time and bit of wear Smile
Boff

old_man_nerf wrote:

You realise it's only spec'd for 4, right? Razz

Thanks for reminding me, though - I need to get some photos of my new GC medic kit now its had its baptism.
blindgeekuk

I'm guessing 4 on the belt, one in the sryfe, one in his hand for rapid reload?

Sneak Peek 5:

Loaners...

Justajolt

That's a pretty decent array! I've not used a slingfire before. Is it stock?
blindgeekuk

Justajolt wrote:

Yeah, with the extra work needed on the gears, I opted not to get a new spring for it. I have 2 of them if you want one?
I got them when I only had the flipfury and roughcut, and for a while it was my favourite, great accuracy, great range, and the whole reload gimmick. But anything above a 12 round clip and it becomes front heavy, and it is soooooo slow in comparison to an eat or rampage... but... it looks better Smile
old_man_nerf

Boff wrote:

4 mags for punters. 6 mags for operators Smile
http://imgur.com/Jd185X4
Justajolt

Just trying it out will do me for now. My wife's encouraging me to deuce the space in home taken up by foam flinging paraphinalea...
blindgeekuk

Looks like we are almost set, justajolt is just off out to get some boxes for cover, old_man_nerf has the games lined up nicely, and i'm still charging imr's!

Note to self, trying to charge 12 imr's the night before the war, with a low amp USB plug into the charger was a stupid idea... invest in another charger...
OldNoob

Have fun guys. My game us on this afternoon too!
Justajolt

Where is yours BTW? If we do this right, we could have a couple of regular wars going each month...
blindgeekuk

Sneak Peek 6

In the words of local lads the Kaiser Chiefs, I predict the riot...

OK, so my 'mad skillz' obviously don't reach as far as making a larp riot shield look good, but it's functional and used less than £10 of materials

Also note, we've now got a 100% success rate of having it snow on an event day, proving that things really are 'Grim Up Nerf'!
Seiryuu

So I'm supposed to be arriving now but the signs still say I'm 3.75 miles from Bradford. Stupid bus timetables.
Hope this doesn't cause too much trouble.
haloxxbilly

Wish I could come.... Sitting at Dover port
blindgeekuk

Initial in car review:

26 people, mostly friends from Justajolt's church
Venue was awesome, indoors and outdoors use big room, big hallway, 3 medium side rooms, long corridor
Riot shield worked great
HvZ most popular game type

Seiryuu, i have 2 off your discs, and i forgot to give you your boomco dart back
The Dark Kitten

Shame i missed out  Sad  but there's always next month.

If the shield really worked i could make another and we could do a game type using them.
old_man_nerf

We've ended up with a spare sledge fire shell. Pm me if you want it back soon or I'll just bring it along to the next event.
blindgeekuk

Possibly mine, i'll take stock of what's missing tomorrow

Yup, it's mine

Justajolt, I have that white missile you were looking for
