Hiatus/ losing interest....

This kind of links to a post in general discussion but I am sticking it here as there's some other things to cover here.

I've really lost my interest. Don't know why I have - think there are a few factors at work here but Nerf/HvZ just doesn't really interest me like it did a year ago. Maybe its the loss of regular playtime and knowing that its pretty unlikely that i will be at any games at all this year due to other commitments such as going on expedition to Borneo in September and this whole graduation malarky.

I've just found other things to fill my time and I kind of see HvZ as a yeah that was fun at uni type phase and nothing more than that.
Seeing the same constant stream of Meh out of Hasbro doesn't help either.

I haven't played since BAGW_2 and weirdly haven't missed it owing to a combo of masses of uni work and other fandom's I am a member of heavily. Anyone with me on FB knows the fandom that has taken me over  Very Happy .

I am still more than happy to lend kit out to people for GC etc but don't expect to see a tangle of limbs with a Sussex accent using it.Heck I'd rather see it used than forlornly sitting in a box.

It was a tough call, but in the end our judges decided this should win the 'most pointless and self gratifying post of the day' award after all.

Any thing useful to contribute?

I used to be a big part of the Dungeons & Dragons scene in the UK, running events across the country, active on forums, facebook, twitter etc and slowly got bored of it, so I can understand where you are coming from with this.

I think that people who have been active in a scene feel they can't turn round and say "this hobby just doesn't excite me anymore" partly because of the backlash they receive, partly because they've usually spent a lot of money to be part of the acne, and partly because they think they are alone, when in reality there's probably another 50 or so members of the 600 signed up on the forums who are feeling the same way.

I also think there's a danger in communities like this where they feel that each year has to be bigger and better than the last one, with more events, bigger more spectacular events, more releases, more research, more mods... and sometimes those things just don't happen...

We should be happy that the hobby is continuing to grow, that new faces, like mine, are popping up and expressing an interest in events.

This is the Off Topic forum, he doesn't have to contribute so step off. If people want to use OT to vent steam (and there's plenty of precedent) then they're welcome to do so. Indeed, there are valid meta-points that Marcus raises that can be discussed.

^ This. Marcus, you've done a hell of a lot at your end and you've taught me a lot in how to deal with a different class of HvZ. You carried the flag at Falmouth when it was pretty crappy down there from the previous team's mistakes. Remember, this hobby is just that; a hobby - a choice in how you spend your free time. You owe us no apology. If life takes you in a different direction and your interests change then go for it. Enjoy yourself, put your heart and talents into something that makes you happy. The same goes for anyone else who's worried they owe it to the community to stick about: thank you for your contribution (whatever it was), you owe us nothing and you've been awesome, just by being here. If you can get to a game in future or just pop onto the forums now and then to say 'Hi', marvellous!

For me, there's nothing better than being kitted up and shooting foam at people. That's something I don't think is going to go away. Hell, quite the inverse: I'm ever more keen and I think that's because I'm drawing energy from vibrant player bases and communities across the world.

Marcus, there will always be space in the OZ pool for you, chap. Everyone else, I hope to see you on the field soon Very Happy

Excellent. One hopes the same libertarian views apply equally to my posts then.....

EDIT

They do, provided that they obey the code of conduct and are not flame posts of any kind

Hope that is clear, as Marcus's post is totally within the rules.

Sorry to see you go buddy, but I totally understand how you feel. I used to love singing in the a cappella group I used to be in, but last year I stopped enjoying it and realized that I didn't even miss it after I stopped doing it.

That wasnt an easy thing to write for me because I've met so many great people through this forum and HvZ in general. It wasn't meant to be woe is me narcissism more a mooting about how things and people change with a slant of losing potential players post university etc.

With the loss of Falmouth I believe there is maybe only 2 or 3 HvZ societies still going here which I think is more to do with founding members or players with highly desirable experience graduating and then you don't have a natural succession , eventually the conveyor belt will run out .

I should be at MCM in October but not at the war if they do it again as it would be slightly tricky for me to play in my costume Razz

I hear you buddy - I went through the exact same thing with organising and playing poker from 2005 to 2010.

Used to love nothing more than playing, then got into organising big games (70 players), then bought a pub poker league franchise, represented my country at amateur level...

Then the bug just went one day. Didn't see it coming - I just had enough.

These things happen. You can't do anything about it. Just move on and ensure you're enjoying life.

All the best.

Same sort of thing here, I used to be absolutely mad for motorbiking- modding, riding, arranged some big group rides, helped run one of the bigger forums, trackdays and a couple of races and that. Then one day, it was just gone- kept trying for a while, just killed the joy even deader.

So now my motorbike is the base for my work table in the garage, poor bastard. And it's covered in mountain bike suspension and a dissected stampede and barricade. Maybe it'll come back, I'll be ready if it does, maybe it never will but you can't create a wave, you can only ride it for as long as it lasts. The main thing's just to always be ready to catch the next one.

I'm very much in the same boat as I'll be graduating soon and looking to move, get a job, etc. and outside of uni it doesn't look like there are that many event happening especially here in the south.

I'm still keeping hold of my gear for a while but I may consider selling it off and going back to airsoft while I prefer the play style of Nerf and the community far better the idea of being able to find a site pay 10-20 for the day pretty much any weekend is far more appealing that waiting for a war to happen or hosting one only to have no or very little interest.

I've been feeling the same way, but building very high effort costumes, exams and LARP (both Green Cloaks and helping to build the Uni system I ref) has meant I haven't had the time to dedicate time to the hobby. Hopefully, I'll get to field-trial my second BSUK 180 RS at GC this weekend, so my enthusiasm is definitely at the highest it's been for months. I've been completely non-stop (either had stuff just on the horizon/happening at the time) for 3 months.
This holiday is needed, for me. It'll be filled with costume creation and LARP, and that's ok Smile
For one thing, I'm very much looking forward to seeing BSUK's Retal kit premiere at GC, so I expect that'll kickstart my Nerf hype again Very Happy

We have got A LOT of stuff that we're testing at GC2. You're still in the 109th, right? If so then you're going to be fighting alongside me and seeing a lot of that kit in action directly. Hopefully that'll help the hype return...

I haven't been to BUZAN for a bit due to stuff and things so all of my Nerf creative energy has gone into GC kit building. For those of you wondering, there's a preview on the blog. That's what happens when I don't get to HvZ for a couple of months... Razz
