My first ever trip to Scotland

So my brother's been at University in Aberdeen since September, so my wife, baby and I went to visit him for a few days... my first ever trip to Scotland! I'm not sure how I went for 34 years without ever venturing further north than York (I was born in Hammersmith, London, so I probably did well getting up that far!) but I loved it and I'm about to tell you why!

Firstly, I didn't realise how far away Scotland is! There's a lot of England in between Leeds and Scotland to begin with. I loved the drive there, over the North Yorkshire hilly bits and whatever else there was. Then I didn't realise how much of Scotland there is between each major Scottish city! And I didn't realise how gorgeous all of that open space would be. Just driving through, it looked spectacular and I can see why most of the people I know from Scotland rave about their own country.

Aberdeen itself was different to any other town I've seen, in that it looks like it's a city of castles. All of the buildings are made not of red brick, but of granite blocks right down to the terraced house my brother rents a room in. It struck me as well that at least one building in three had some kind of feature like a parapet or a tower or something that made it look like a castle, which my daughter loved!  Since we were there during the shortest day of the year, I was also amazed as how much of a difference that six hours drive north makes in terms of the daylight you get! We got dusk at three-ish yesterday.

My brother introduced me to the wonders of deep-fried pizza before we left (I managed a quarter!) and, on our way home, we drove through Edinburgh and stopped at a chippie. I enjoyed a battered haggis and I've no idea why the rest of the UK doesn't do Edinburgh chippie sauce as well.

Rab, BigAl, FDT, you've got a gorgeous country up there and I feel like I've committed a crime by taking so long to find that out! I also have a massive appreciation now for the driving you do, BigAl and family, to get down to Leeds for GuN! You guys are troopers!

Glad you enjoyed your trip mate!

You should have said you would be stopping off in Edinburgh and I would have met up for that chippie! Next time!
Rab

Ha ha, cool jolt.

Glad you enjoyed, theres still the "pizza crunch" to try, pizza in batter 🍕

That sounds awful Rab! I should point out to our Southern cousins that not all Scots are Irn Bru quaffing deep fried foodstuff munchers!

But yes, Edinburgh chippie sauce is amazing!

Yes, I'm lucky I have a very large family (I'm the youngest of 13 kids  Shocked ) and they are spread far and wide all over the place so I've had the chance to explore most nooks and crannies of Scotland and I love it. We have a camping road trip every year going somewhere new and always somewhere stunning to go.

Just looked up how to make chippie sauce: Brown (Broon) sauce and vinegar 50/50.

A lol out load quote from the reddit forum I got it from:

"I'll no be havin anything oan ma chips that they're having in Westminster!"

Fantastic! I wish I was a Scot.
Rab

We keep ours in a milk carton in the fridge.

I think I'll start having a stock of Chippie sauce in a carton in my fridge too to go with the German curry-wurst sauce I also love (ketchup and curry powder).

Yup! Edinburgh is one of the few beautiful places that  a tourist must see.  Other spots like , Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye is kind of magical.
