Robot Wars

I'm a massive fan of the wars, always have been and when news broke of a new season my initial reaction was "Ugh... They'll ruin it."

I have to say that it is as good as it has ever been and it's great to see some new teams wading in to the arena and kicking arse.

So, team BritNerf. When are we going to do this?
Boff

CarrierII and I are already on the control and RMS builds.... Razz
UKNerfWar

Projectiles are not permitted in the rules so there goes the Nerf cannon.
The Dark Kitten

I couldn't help but find myself shouting at the screen when Thor won his first game.
Many insults included. Cocky B******. Really didn't like that guy. Especially since Thor hasn't used an axe in ages and then its a hammer what?!?! Make your mind up.
Really Foxic was what really hoped to win but apparently not. He got toasted.
I was rarther surprised a self oxidizing lipo fire did not occur (dont you know) since an axe/hammer + lipo usually would lead to a fire but apparently not.

Must say I was glad to have it back.
Really brought me back to watching TinTin and then Robot wars in tue afternoons.

We can still cover it in metal faux Nerf darts.

I like the new everyone fights everyone approach but I do feel as though the fact that the final has inevitably already been played when it comes is a major failing of that system.

That can be slightly mollified by the possibility of breakages whilst fighting the other 2 in the head to heads, stuff bad enough that they can't manage to fix it during the 2 hour work time between rounds.

Haven't seen the latest but that first episode was good. Dara's perfect, they needed someone that could enjoy it and get excited without ever pretending it's not basically stupid. (tbh it's exactly like our hobby isn't it?)

(I was a bit conflicted with Razer getting put out so ingloriously, that was a bit cheap... But it'd have been torn apart by the compeition if it hadn't fallen in the pit and that would have been a shame too. It'd be good to have some sort of wildcard/playoff to get the best losers back in)
Elime_rawne

Really looking forward to how this new series pans out.

To be honest though, whichever UK channel secures the rights to the latest season of Battlebots is going to be my go to for robot carnage. In classic american style their weight limits are higher and they have less restrictions on weaponry (I believe one robot this year even has a second half which flies and has a flame cannon).

I will just leave this here... one of my fav moments... no one knew what was in the present.

Can't remember why but I never liked battlebots.

Foxic and Shockwave were probably the best designed robots in the second episode but they were clearly quite shoddily built. Thor, on the other hand, was built amazingly well and had a really impressive amount of pushing power but its weapon was rubbish.

As for cockiness, Foxic spent the entire time adamant that they'd fixed their failing robot and not once did they manage to do so. They were far more annoying in that regard than Thor.

Dara does the job well, never once quite pointing out how non-serious it is but cutting it pretty close and thus allowing the silly side to shine. Got to agree, he's a good fit.

Razer was a robot I really loved but the team were stupid and careless. Not upping your weight in 4 seasons despite entirely relying on your ability to carry opponents into the pit? Of course you're going to fall in with the new, heavier opponents you morons.
Boff

Agreed, Foxic were a waste of parts. How they managed to get anywhere is beyond me. I love Shockwave's design, it was a definite favourite here in the office. If they can get rid of those exposed drive chains and improve on the wheels, they've got a winning formula. The original scoop was ideal and that full 360 design is great. I'd be curious to see how they fare against Carbide...
Seiryuu

Given how manoeuvrable they seemed in the finals, I reckon they'd have a good chance. All they need is one poor landing from Carbide and it's over.
Justajolt

Just watched on Iplayer.

It's a shame about losing Thor. It was incredibly well driven!

Foxic was a victim of his driver's own cockiness, very nicely compounded by clever editing by producers to induce audience contempt (it worked). He must have really upset the staff for that to happen! Admittedly, the robot was struggling too.

I wonder if we'll see any of the other old favourites. Hypnodisc, Firestorm or Chaos 2 would be great. Or that amazing one with the red fur that kept on getting set on fire!

I'd love to see some house robot bashing as well...
Seiryuu

We saw Foxic take on a house robot very effectively but it never got chance to finish the job. Was quite dissapointed that it never had a second go.

As for the britnerf bot, my idea is a large golfball like core surrounded by a cube that houses the flywheels needed to turn it. The core would jut out the center of each side, allowing it to act as a wheel, and I also envision it acting as the antenna a la Stinger. The cube would have bladed edges and, when spun horizontally rather than vertically, act as a low end spinner weapon.

I haven't fully considered the plausibility yet but that's my concept for something unique yet vaguely relevant to our hobby.

There is a entire forum dedicated to robot combat such as this. Link: https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php

You get used to it after years of experience. Unfortunately it is much more prone to s**tposting and generally has a slightly toxic community but bugger it, it's robot combat. Also, it has a free copy of an abandoned shovelware game called Robot Arena 2 with regular tournaments. Sorry if i'm being a shill but I rarely get to mention this place elsewhere without being laughed at  so I've beeen touting it a bit.
Seiryuu

Well this week's episode had some attrocious judging. Storm won on judge decision while immobilized, yet Apollo lost by default while driving away intact? And the fangasming commentary about the joys of the internet that took a massive tangent and ignored the competition entirely? Why?

The right robot won in the end but one of the finalists should never have made it that far.
Boff

Thread necromancy! Well, sort of...

If anyone was curious what a catastrophic LiPo failure looks like, see yesterday's show. Smile
UKNerfWar

Also goes to show how much punishment they can take before going thermo.
Broz

Warp Core breach!
Twibz

I'm loving this series...AND we're getting Time Commanders back.

All we need is Scrapheap Challenge and Time Team to return and British Telly will officially be awesome again.

Was quite impressed by how unexplosive it seemed to be.
It was an all-round excellent episode and I was very fond of both finalists but these constant technical failures are a tad dissapointing.
