What Else do you Modify?

You know the feeling all too well. It's raining, you're bored and there are no blasters nearby. I found myself in this exact situation recently.

Now, I could have cut in the paint around my living room ceiling. I could have replaced the pull switch in my bathroom. I could have done one of many household chores but I didn't. I decided to modify something that didn't really need it.

My attention turned to my son's Hotwheels track. It has a flywheel based launcher that propels the cars around the track. It was asking for it really.

I took it appart, rewired it, dropped in some new motors (Barricade motors worked a charm), hooked it up to a digital power supply and pushed a car through it. The car shot around the track, flew off and hit me in the arm really hard. Upon reflection I should've started on a low voltage and worked my way up but then where would the adventure be?

Dialing it back to 6v I managed to make the track distinctively un-sucky and it now fires cars through the double loop system flawlessly.

I kept the original battery tray in tact because I may decide to let my son use it again and he can't handle 6v worth of awesome.

So I'm putting the question out there, besides Nerf, what else have you modified for no particular reason?
OldNoob

Now that is a cool mod! Need to chrono those, then we can calculate the speed....

Pretty much everything I have ever bought got modded in some way or other, who wants something everyone has? It's a disease really, moddingitis.

I had something like that as a kid... and Scalextrics, imagine a Sharked Scalextrics car Razz

I don't really modify things because I dont have the dexterity in order to deal with solder and fiddly little things... I just try to find ways of making life easier , but thats more geek things like altering programs and things.
Northwind

That's ace, good work.

I did this, once

Considering it was my daily driver and I put 50000 miles on it, and it started out as a cat d write off, probably not the most sensible show bike. You could buy a faster bike for less than the suspension alone cost but ah, what a love affair... Learned to spray, work metal and plastic, wire, weld, lay fibreglass, build an engine and a fork...

Only downside is it ended up too light and too powerful to race in its race class so I never did get to do that  Laughing

Just because you may not have the dexterity to mod Marcus, doesn't mean you can't mod.
Every mod starts with a mad idea.

It may end up being ON or OMN or Boff (or his minions! Razz ) doing the heavy lifting, but they all have to work from ideas!

Generate those and you're sorted!
MarcusH

Indeed I normally throw Boff and UKNW my crazy ideas.... Razz Although me and Boff have a current game called "how many discworld references can you fit in an email and the email still makes sense"

It's a real thing! I have minions!

On topic, I don't so much mod but I do have a thing for repairing clothes. I'm slowly learning to sew and it's coming in handy keeping a lot of my field gear in one piece. Smile
dsb

I've built a few of these...

But I can't seem to sort my LongShot.

...go figure

Phones mostly. Take one perfectly good mobile and then replace the ROM and kernel, mix in some rooted app control and try to achieve the same aim as I do with Nerf mods - fast performance with minimal power drain.

All my mountain bikes have been so heavily modified that they end up being only  the original frame, so now I build from the frame up. Tbh though almost everything rhat can be modified os a temptation to me, like my old rc cars, airsoft guns even the exhausts on my 2 stroke generator and chainsaw plus almost everything else.  It is a previously said like a disease, however it comes in handy when you have to install things being able to fit things using parts in a different way or being able to modify or redisgn things to make them work makes life easier.

The answer to that is: "Millenium Hand and Shrimp. Buggrit!"

Edit: Just saw this:

I was looking at my old cotic the other night, I think it's possible that some of the suspension pivot hardware is original but every other part including all the frame members has been replaced  Laughing

You're not wrong. I joked that I'd broken everything but the seatstays a while back, two weeks later, day one of the enduro world series at innerleithen and guess what broke  Laughing I'd just got the bastard re-anodised too.

Oh I forgot to mention how mich of my camera gear is less than bone srock, bit that is more add ons and firm/software hacking than modificarion though  there can be a lot of fitting.

What Else Do You Modify?

I will give a glimpse of my old multi-functional cellphone and try to modify its settings if I would be able to use it again. I'm planning to give it to my aunt for her own use if it is still possible. Smile

Well ^^^^^^^^^ this is a bit necro,  but as we're in off topic and is missed this thread first time round, I'll be posting my contribution later, it will explain why I've been a bit quiet on here the last couple of months also.
