Zombie Hunters of Manchester - planning thread

So...

I have found that there are a huge lack of wars in the Manchester area specifically in the humans verses zombies section.

I said i would take up what Starfalcon Tactical and Grim Up Nerf is hard for me to get to therefore starting a war in Manchester will not only add to the community but add to the possibilities for other nerfers.

Ok enough wittering to the details.

Right...
The day itself is still up for debate but is likely to be one Saturday in May thats where you come in handy
The venue is https://www.hallshire.com/halls/view/2804/hale-barns-scout-hall which will cost £25 for 4hours
I was also thinking Wythenshawe park ; a large open area of which we can find a secluded corner as from experience people don't go in the corners. Although that is up for debate.
It will span form 1-4 2hours of play 1hours to do whatever (Clearing darts, showing off blasters etc)

It's a fairly easy to get to venue with many buses getting you to St ambrose school and then a short walk to the venue.

There will be a 150fps cap and all in all don't be silly!
Obviously no abusive behavior etc etc etc

There is quoted car parking according to the site for all you road users.
Responses would be nice with advise and dates such forth
Thanks!

Justajolt

I'd travel to this! Anyone else?

Saturdays are good for me!

At that price, get fifteen people at £2 each and that's the hall and some darts covered!

I'd also be up for some fun in the park too.

Let's make it happen!

Get a facebook group up (says he who doesn't have facebook 0_o)
The Dark Kitten

I have actually just made the group and added Jodo Cast as i needed someone to add...hope he doesn't mind temperately.

It called "Manchester Buzan Society" and should be open to join or atleast i'll add people into it if they want. (PM me your FB names)

Grim up Nerf party bus to Manchester!

Could be an 'experience' Smile
blindgeekuk

OK second try, vodafone signal is dead in otley!

May is a bad month for me, family party, Grim up Nerf 5, and potentially bristol. Leaves sat 21st as the only available saturday, and I suspect that'll be pushing my luck to get another Nerf event in

However... if the missus says yes, and it's on a weekend i'm free, and one of the others is able to take me, then we'll be over, and we'll bring our gear to help you out on your first game

Edit: you do realise that you're effectively named 'Manchester bristol university zombie apocalypse network society' don't you?

How about 'Zombie Hunters of Manchester' (zhom) or something that rolls of the tongue a bit better
old_man_nerf

I'm going to suggest Nerf Operatives in Manchester or NOM for short. But yes, not accidentally associating with a load of students is probably a good thing.
Seiryuu

I'm not on facebook but would be down for the party bus.
Justajolt

"The GrimUp bus is coming... (to the Vengabus tune)"
blindgeekuk

My worry with the 4 GuN'ners who've responded so far... we won't have space for our array of stuff in a single vehicle!

Northwind

Manchester's just a suburb of Brizzle really isn't it?

Just checking in to say, I can't do may but don't take it as a lack of support, in a quieter month I'd most probably be there, Manchester's not that far.

Where's the random I from Razz .
Justajolt

It stands for "I"'ve got a brand new combine harvester.
Dustybin

I am prepared for some pro zambie slaying action! Sadly I don't think the Grim Up Nerf party bus will be coming this far south.
Boff

It's from the fact that our office keyboard is fucked and keeps making me mis-type shit. I really ought to order a new one from the profits of the stall at the weekend.

If you need advice starting a Nerf organisation, there's plenty here to help you. From experience, I would suggest that unless you're working to produce campus HvZ then you're better off running a generic Nerf group with zombie themed rounds. Smile
old_man_nerf

This. Dark kitten I'll PM you later. We have decided to take the imitative on sharing our resources and will send you some details on what we do and how we go about it. Save you reinventing the wheel.
The Dark Kitten

Thanks everone for the feed back and boff and blindgee's correction.

I have renames it as ZHOM instead of NOM as Nom is also Nerf 'o' Maina and I don't mwant people to get confused.
The Grim Up party bus sounds like fun idea for the Leed bunch. A real "Experience".

So can we do numbers of who will bring friends family etc just as a preliminary look over.
blindgeekuk

I'm sure old_man_nerf has been in touch by now, but we're happy to help got things going. In terms of dates, it might be worth considering June rather than may, especially if your venue books up quickly

Looking at the scout hall, it looks slightly larger than the hall we used for GuN1. You know what kind of games we were able to run there, and I reckon now we have a bit more experience, we could adapt a couple of the others as well.

My main concern with that venue is the lack of outdoor area, one thing we've learnt from subsequent events at the chapel in Tong is that the interplay between indoor and outdoor, with multiple entry/exit points really makes HvZ zing, and the final battles always play out in the car park.

What would be ideal is a similar kind of venue to what we are using, large indoor space, with enclosed car park to create a safe play area. Schools, youth centres, churches, scout huts etc.
Seiryuu

Realistically, my friends will never get involved with anything. The ones who are into Nerf act all interested but would rather play sports every wednesday and weekened.
It's sad really.

.

The venue we have managed to arrange is excellent for it's purposes, but even we had to start somewhere. I'd say £25 for 4 hours hire is a bit of a bargain, even if all it does is bring the Manchester and beyond Nerfers out of the woodwork and you then get on to organising other events at other venues through the contacts you make.
blindgeekuk

Absolutely, and I should have stressed that. My local scout hut is £30 for 3 hours and is tiny! so £25 for 4 hours, and bigger, with a small outdoor space is definitely a bargain.

We know that there are good game types we can do in that kind of space, and like old_man_nerf says, even if it just gets the manchester folk out of the wood work and you can see if theres interest, like we did on our first event, it'll be worth while.
The Dark Kitten

Right I've read it and looked it over.
When i use it i will have to do some minor name editing but is very good advise.

I want to move the war to June for my and others aid.
So what can people do?
Starfalcon Tactical

may be able to do this. IM pleased to hear that at last someone was able to organise this. Shame I wasn't but hopefully this will be a great day for everyone involved.
Starfalcon Tactical

sounds good
old_man_nerf

I'm also going to suggest that Dark Kitten gets to choose as he's organising this event  Wink
The Dark Kitten

Well after all we are a community game so when I find a good mix I'll leave it to you guys
old_man_nerf

Sometimes as an organiser you have to put a line in the sand and make a choice.

Decisions by committee are not decisions but a series of compromises (he says working in a place that only makes decisions by committee.... Smile)
Justajolt

Any Saturday in June is fine for me, apart from second Saturday, which is GuN.
The Dark Kitten

I'm going with the first Saturday.
But as alwaays I want to fit with everyone else so it can easily change.
Who can make that and in what numbers?
Justajolt

So, that's the fourth of June. I'm in.
blindgeekuk

I'm up for it, nothing on yet for Sat June 4th.

What kind of time?
The Dark Kitten

blindgeekuk wrote:

Good weve got 2 in.
Im still going Grim Up times of 1-4 so 1hour of chatting / clear up and the rest play time
Dustybin

I should be able to come on the ninth, if something pops up I will tell you ( hoping there is not diving thing on that day).
The Dark Kitten

Well can move it to suit you if you want and...
Diving??? Scuba??? Annother thing I do!
Dustybin

Don't worry about moving the date for me, if they have diving I will tell them "No." If I do get the ability to come I might be able to bring a limited supply of homemade cookies because I can, (also I don't do the diving, my dad and brother does and my mum can't drive for about 2 hours by herself).

The Dark Kitten wrote:

So is it the 4th or the 9th and for whose benefit are you planning on moving the date?

Do you have a venue for the suggested dates?

I'd recommend finding out if a suitable place is free first, then if you must run this as a popularity contest put up some dates for people to vote on.

Otherwise you'll get to Christmas and be no nearer a consensus on dates Smile

(PS - i like the idea of sticking to the same Saturday each month - once people learn this it becomes a habit and they become regulars)
The Dark Kitten

Right I'm keeping it to the first Saturday to make it easy for everyone.
Later today im going to send an email to the venue on the first page to see if they have an opening.
Justajolt

Still wanting to do this! Keep me posted ^_^
The Dark Kitten

I wasmhoping for a reply of the hall by now but it turns out the email was sent as a draft not as genuine so I'm mjust in the process of rewriting it and sending it back off. Would you kindly bring the all powerful chrono to the war if its not an inconvenience it would be great fun to see what performance our blasters get.
Justajolt

That's what it's for! Will do.
The Dark Kitten

Email is complete now all that is to do is wait for a reply.

So now I'd like to take the chance to ask what you will be bringing gear wise etc just tl keep the conversation going.

EDIT:  Almost forgot I'll be bringing my full BSUK belt which should be finished by rhen which is:
          A Mk2 drop leg mag holster holding 2 18mags.
A Mk 4 drop leg holster with a stock/maybe my blasterparts hammershot.
The small zipped pouch for spair darts
My 3s rhinoed stryfe (the Australian one)
          BSUK sidestrike + holster
          Roughcut
          Double strike
Then whatever extra will fit in my bag
EDIT 2: All of course for sharing and lending
blindgeekuk

Personal gear: Bertha, hammershot, lawbringer, sledgefire. Magpouches, holsters etc

Other gear: if there's space in whoever can give me a lift... the usual GuN gear, so camo nets, loaner blasters, darts, lights, smoke machine, safety glasses, red/blue team stripe, clips...
The Dark Kitten

blindgeekuk wrote:

So we going all out this time with smoke lights etc?
I can always contribute got a load of superbright LEDs that have been wanting to be used for ages.
They quote to have tables and chairs so the nets can be out to good use I will also get buisy this bank holiday Monday off school and make some flags and foldable cover maby even a shield depends on how I feel.
blindgeekuk

Well, the smoke machine is great for smaller venues, and is part of our deluxe offering! I forgot the riot shields and vulcan (now with 2 chains for 49 shots!)

Edit: Justajolt... do you reckon this would be a good time to out the trip wires?
The Dark Kitten

What??? This is crazy !!!
I take the trip wires set off alarms or set of lights or something.
I think we'll do a couple of semi normal games just to get into it then go full out crazy with the effects.
Do they add to the atmosphereor something? And will the smoke machine set of the smoke alarm?
Justajolt

Let's do it! It'll be trippin'!

Yeah, they're lazers and a sensor which sets an alarm off when the beam is broken.

I'll be bringing personal kit (Rayven, Rapidpistol and Barricade/Hammershot loadout) and loaner bag containing 15ish springer frontloaders.

I'll also bring chess timers for king of the hill! Ha! We could have a Grim Up Nerf version called king of the Hull! We should name all of our games like that!

Protect the core = Protect the Mill etc
old_man_nerf

I'd vote for 'king u't mill'.
Justajolt

I love it! We need more like that!
old_man_nerf

'Trouble at mill'

A group of Luddites are trying to break into the mill to smash the spinning Jenny.

You have to prevent them using Nerf blasters.

If three Luddites make it into the textile mill they win the game Smile
The Dark Kitten

We shout name it trubble ut' mill with a right Yorkshire accent.
Do they have to run at it with sabots and clogs because honestly I'd want to be behind the blaster.
Justajolt

DKitten (ha! that could be a gangsta name!) could you send me your raw footage from previous Grim up Nerf events so I can try some game editing?
The Dark Kitten

We have made contact!
I have really pushed these poor people into giving an answer and now I am waiting a call to discuss this further.
But!!! Something inavoidable has sadly cropped up the 4th so a redate sadly will be needed and with that more disscusion. Unless everone can do the 7th and then my lfe is easy.

Edit: Jolt. I'll send my FP footage over as soon as possible probably tomorrow as im a tad rushed today.
Dustybin

7th? As in the Tuesday? If so then I can't come because school reasons but that's me, you will have to see how many people can come before you change the date.
The Dark Kitten

My mistake 11th I couldn't go either due to school!
And I doubt others would due to work reasons
Dustybin

11th is fine for me I think because there is no diving on that day so that is good. Have we lost the zombie theme and why are people trying to break into a textiles mill, is there a shortage of clothes?
The Dark Kitten

Honestly I planed for it to be a HvZ society but due to numbers a BUZAN society.
I don't mind the fact that we have lost the zombie edge but we will focus on the zombie aspects during the game.  Mostly being Speed HvZ and BUZAN game modes.  The mill cloths thing is the gam mode attack the core where you have to dump a set amount of darts into a bucket whilst people defend.  And to keep it from the North we made it attack the mill as Manchester has an extensive amount off mills and gained it fame from them.

EDIT

Spelling and grammar are required on this forum. Please ensure your post is correct before posting ON

blindgeekuk

Sat 11th June is unlikely for me as GuN6 should be that day. I'll discuss it with the others next weekend though
old_man_nerf

After our last change of date I'm inclined to say we stay as we are - the dark kitten knows we run on the second Saturday of the month.
The Dark Kitten

My mistake of couse grum up was on the second week...how foolish.
The reason for change is that I cant do the 4th.
We could try 3rd week. Just this time and then go back to 1st weeks.

We all deserve an update on this now so here goes.

No reply of the original venue so i take they are out.
this leaves the back up option which is Whythenshawe park...
I am a bit uncomfortable doing this as of the MTB "Swatting" and the general gist of that.
But really this is a good point to focus on and is fairly easy to get to.

If everyone is happy with this then i can move on to the actual game thread rather than planning.

EDIT

Please DO NOT double post. That's three posts for spelling/grammar and double post. Please edit your previous post if you have more to add. I know you are trying to sort an event out, but forum rules still apply and a post is no good if it's half gibberish. Any more poor post etiquette and I will issue a warning. ON

FFS. It really pisses me off they over-hyped that fucking video title. Seriously. If by 'swatted' you mean that the fuzz turned up and said 'Hi' then I've been swatted at least twice in the course of my Nerfing career. The fact I had a lovely chat with the officers in question, explained what we were doing and how much fun it was clearly has no bearing on this fact. You have a right to use a public park in compliance with the law of the land you're living in. It's sad that you might need to dial 101 and chat to the Police Ops room for your area so they know what's going on but that's because Joe Public's uninformed and can be a bit trigger happy. Or they don't like you having fun around them because they're dead inside like that. Either way, fuck it. Host your war in a public park, have fun and show the world what the fuck we're on this forum for: having fun in a hobby we enjoy. Fuck anyone who tries to otherwise curb your right to do that.

Any news on this Dark Kitten?
Justajolt

Ditto! I'm excited for it and pencilled out that Saturday...
Franksie

I'll be at Download that weekend, otherwise it would have been nice to come and introduce myself to some of you guys
Justajolt

Come to the next Grim Up Nerf! We'd love to meet you ^_^
Franksie

Will definitely make a meet soon.  I have very few weekends free as a seperated parent so its about finding the right date!
NorthernWarrior

When is it and is there a age restriction? might bring me and my friend
old_man_nerf

Good point. Your OP could do with a tidy up to bring it up to date.

Dates/times/location/blaster requirements/rules of engagement/explanation of the no under 18's unless signed off/no under 16's unless chaperoned/etc.
The Dark Kitten

Well you have stumbled into our planning thread the actual one has the date next to it
The actual event is on the 18th at wythenshawe park 1-4
Age restrictions are under 16s bring a parent and they can watch or join in and 16-17 need parental permission which I can print out for you.
I'd love to see you come we just keep growing.
