Post Bristol Blast 4 - After Action Report  Reply with quote
Good Evening.  What an absolutely awesome day we had at Bristol Blast 4.  The weather was good, cold but not wet or windy.  The venue was excellent too.  We had a much bigger turnout than expected.  I'm not sure of the exact number, but it must have been around 30.

I'll try to give a brief recap of the day, but won't go into a tonne of detail about the games, as I'm sure the fellow Britnerfers who attended can chip in with their stories.

The day started at 1250 (ish) with a quick briefing on the rules for the venue and game safety, etc.  Just before the briefing started, we were joined by a mystery presence... we shall call it The Masked Avenger.  This was quite the surprise, and it just stood there in a rather menacing mask, not saying anything and giving everyone the creeps... more on this a little later.

Just after 1300 the fun began.  We played so many fast and furious games I can't remember them all.  We had an unlimited respawn TDM to start, which was all sorts of fun.  We moved into Kill Confirmed and had 2 rounds of that.  We did a HvZ, or two.  Followed by a Bomb Run - this ended in a draw.

We had a break and switched the teams up to even things out a little more as the Red Team were no match for the Blue Team - at which point we ran out of Red and Blue tape (actually that happened earlier, and we had some Greens and Whites wandering around too).  So we became Green and White Teams - for the next time we are going to be working on a better way of doing team identification... that is probably the biggest take away from the event.

So we then did another TDM with a bag of sweets for each team indicating the number of respawns each had.  This was good fun and lasted a good while.   After this we bounced straight into back to back HvZ games - one of which Luke (L11) managed to maintain his having been the last human in at least one game per event record.  I sat one of the games out to take photos, but had to use my phone as my camera wasn't playing nice.

After that it was into Kill Confirmed again - however there was some confusion which caused a restart.  At this point it started getting dark so we finished up around 1630.

All in all it was a brilliant day.  L11 has pretty much lost his voice and we converted at least one Noob to start modding Smile

Now... back to The Masked Avenger.  This presence was running around wreaking havoc and destroying Nerfers... with a green Boomco something or other... not cool man, not cool.  After having various whispers of who this mystery presence was for about 2 hours, during the break The Mask was removed to reveal that it was none other than our very own OldNoob.  As you can imagine, this created quite the buzz with all the modders who know Tom, and he was inundated with a barrage of questions from the kids... not sure I could have handled that.  Anyway, thanks for coming along and seeing what we're doing, and for all the advice as always Smile

There's probably so much more, I could talk about... but at this point I shall let the others that attended add their stories to the mix.

PS - A massive thanks to Luke, Pete, Jay and Dave (who couldn't be there) for making the event happen.
PPS - Another massive thanks to Boff for the loan of the radios - these were invaluable
PPPS - The next Bristol Blast is looking to be taking place at the end of January - so if things are a bit quiet, it's due to seasonal activities, etc.  But we will still be on the forum, and will let you guys know about it as soon as we have a date and venue fixed.

Links to Photos: Bristol Blastol 4 Photos - sorry for the potato quality of the photos - my DSLR seems to have died on the day and I reverted taking these on my phone.  This is the first HvZ game after the break.

Oldnoob was complaining that he couldn't just turn up and play on the chat last week, so doesn't surprise me he turned up masked.

Glad it was a good day, hope the weather holds for us next week!

Congratulations on what sounds like another great event!

It was a really good day and everything went smoothly.

After shouting all day to explain games ect I cannot tell my wife how it went as my voice had gone!

I also got to run my RS for the first time in a war, it was brilliant!!

And to mimic NN113 comment. As war organisers we are working brilliantly together and hopefully it showed today.

I'm still giggling about the ON thing after it was mentioned on discord.
I think it was a plendid idea of him adding real fun and laughs to our "serious" hobby
Might have added bonus points for hitting him tbh like that pesky UFO in space invaders

Thanks for all the great feedback guys, it really was a great day.  I was glad to be able to test my new Chest and Blaster action camera rigs, and hopefully the videos for these came out ok - I will be reviewing and editing these over the next week or so.

My highlight of the day was probably one of the Kill Confirmed games... I'd been tagged and was screaming for help.  I think Zenif's boy, David, managed to tag me back in a split second before one of the enemy tagged me, by which time I'd been able to tag them and kill them.  That was awesome.

I've also finished editing the photos and updated the first post with links.

Glad to be of service even by remote. You're welcome to borrow the radios for the January but I will need them back before then.

It's good to see a regular Nerfing group starting to come together on my door step. Hopefully things will be a little less frantic in the New Year and I can come along and show you all how it's done. Wink

Thanks to all of you for a great event. Here's my footage of the days games there was more but I found the chest cam didn't pick much up compared to using a head cam, which my costume prevented!
Looking forward to attending another in the new year.

Thanks OldNoob. It was great. Loved the reaction of all the kids. And the zombie footage was excellent. Also loved the dual wielding hammershots. So glad you were able to make it and look forward on seeing you at future events.

Annoyingly you can't see the targets half the time in the gameplay due to the fact I crouch a lot and then all I could see when I used a proper primary was the blaster!
I did enjoy the reactions to my appearance, the kids were very funny. I will have to think of something else for next time.

It's brilliant that ON got you on film Welsh Mullet then NN113 also snapped the sheer fear on you face with his camera! That made me chuckle

You guys need to edit your bomb run rules, we play if you are tagged holding the bomb you may hand it off once (dying breath revenge!) or take it back to the spawn with you and try again. If you drop it/miss the bucket, it returns to YOUR base and may be picked up again. Sometimes we use two bombs per team as well.

Yeah ON you are right - we need to tweak that game, next time we will play it as you mentioned.
Our team lost our bomb at one point as it was dropped under a seat!

I think Bomb Run is one of those games we've been struggling to get exactly right.  Either the base is too hard to get to, or if it's in a good place then something else isn't quite right, as ON has rightly pointed out.

But we're here to learn and take these experiences to make future events better... that is one of the things I like about this community - no one stands still, ever.  Constantly pushing boundaries, tweaking games, providing feedback - all to make the game better for everyone!
