Post GuN11 After Action Report  Reply with quote
You'd have thought that after 10 previous events, i'd get things right...

Thats not to say that Grim Up Nerf 11 was a bad one, in fact, I had more people praise this one than ever before... but as an organiser, there were a lot of things that could have been so much better, and I take responsibility for this. My biggest mistake was regarding the announcement.

But enough of being negative...

We were down a Justajolt this month, he had the opportunity to run two kids parties, but he managed to find a small amount of time to nip in and film some clips for the youtube channel. Expect to see BigAl, Scuzzer etc soon...

The weather this morning was atrocious, and I was expecting it to have some impact on our numbers either increasing them or decreasing them. Without a Justajolt, I was aiming to run a smaller event, controlling the numbers via the amount of glasses and loaner blastrs. But as the weather cleared up, the wind died down, and the sun tried to make an appearance, I gave up on that idea, and while I kept a smaller number on the table, all 56 of the glasses I had got used. When you consider that a significant chunk of our BitNerfers bring their own, we were above the 60 player mark...

We started in the usual way, Meatgrinder, while a bunch of us congregated around Old_Man_Nerf's car to see what fun things he had just bought, including an Apollo...

We did a 4 team freezetag (with the customary dig at the scots for their weird game name...). I was expecting the 4 teams to make it quicker, but we actually found it reached a stale mate where 2 teams each controlled a car park each. OMN and I were both rocking rivals for this round, and while the apollo and atlas are both grindy primes, they are fairly fun, though the little blighters bounce off everywhere, and I had a LOT of jams in the atlas in a single game.

We did some rounds of HvZ which, thanks to 4 original zombies, meant a fairly fast game.

We tried a new variant of bomb run, a Guy Fawkes inspired, android like game. It was ok, but I think the layout of the chapel and car park and the resulting speedy game play is a downside.

Then onto by far my favourite of the kids games... Terminator. With the rules clesrer this time round, and all but BigAl from the adult britnerfers being a T800, I handed out a veritable bucket load of mega blasters... BigAl got to use the mastodon, and I passed around missile launchers and other blasters. The humans had 3 goals - keep John Connor alive, blow skynet up, and get Kyle Reese to the time portal... It was a one hit, take a knee game, with only John Connor (dustybin) and Kyle Reese able to heal... Yeah...
Dusty went down fairly early in the game and while Kyle Reese's player was in the time portal fairly early on, he left it to try and save Dusty... He almost made it, but with a lucky 4vitory shot, I clinched it for Skynet!

Last kids game was Predator, an excuse for the kids to get the last of it out of their system and shoot me...

For the adult games, we did an awfuls round... it was awful!

A couple of rounds of Team Deathmatch, the first round being youngster vs adults... Yeah... 2 rapidpistols kinda makes mincemeat of anything the youngsters could muster. Second round of this was more equal, though Daredevil suffered a catastrophic battery compartment collapse.

We then tried Bounty Hunter, which is definitely a game type I want to try again. My team did a great job of taking the opposite down, and grabbing Franksie, the bounty.

We finished with a couple of rounds of Luddites int' Mill, which is definitely a good psyche game.

Player Behaviour...

We had a few incidents this month with a couple of players who don't seem to be able to follow instructions. They have been warned, and if their behaviour doesn't improve at the next event, they will be banned for 3 months...

Gear wise...

Daredevil was a really good blaster, so i need to fix that asap.
Hammershot had some feed issues whihc i think was down to wet darts
Sledgefire barely got touched this month
Atlas was fun, but I am not sold on rivals
Mastodon is SO much fun
Rotofury performed well the 2 hots I actually fired from it
Magnus clip mod, so much better than the rotofury

Great to hear you had another successful event. You're certainly leading the field up there. Razz

What happened with Daredevil? Did the compartment uncouple itself from the main shell or was it something else?

And you'll have problems with player behaviour. Just drop the hammer on them and be done with it. If you misbehave, you're not allowed to join in the fun. That's regardless of age... We had only 1 incident in all the time we were running BUZAN. Always here to help out with advice if you need it.

It looks like the devcon failed... the whole battery compartment tray peeled off over the course of a couple of minutes, from front to back, leaving the lilo dangling...

Given my motor cover slipped and needed regluing,i think  the devcon might have been a duff batch, as it's easy to clean off the tray, almost like it has the consistency of hot glue.

We had a lot of leftover bits, I'll put up a full list once I can move again and have unpacked the car

Thanks for having us again, we all had a good day and the kids were all done by the end of the day. I gave my 'mantaray' Rampage's a go in a few rounds and WOW it worked seamlessly. Out of the 8 refills of 35 round drums I put through it, I got one solitary jam, I was expecting loads but as long as you prime it firmly to ensure both barrels engage properly it seems to work a treat. It looks very big and intimidating and a couple of times as I advanced on players they ran off Very Happy Also the double barrelled slam fire was awesome, at one point I managed to flank a group hiding behind a car and quickly tag all four before they even got a shot off at me Very Happy I went down quickly during HvZ and spent most of the.game chasing people down which was not a good idea as I was knackered afterwards, took a while to recover and I kind of missed most of bomb run while I recovered. Terminator was fun and BGUK bestowed the mighty Mastodon on me (I have an awesome picture I'll post later when I get home) great fun was had, managed to stun a few T800 s and get kyle reece to the portal early on but then I went to help John conner and got nailed a couple of times, I had BGUK  in my sights and pulling the Rev trigger as he made the winning shot to end the game. During bounty hunter I managed to take full clip from Mr Crains mag strike in the face which was fun Very Happy and during the Mill game I was having a shoot out skuzzer and copped a couple in the face from his awesome desalator, ouch but such a nice blaster Very Happy Good to meet some more of you guys and as always put a face to the name, looking forward to being back again in the new year. Cheers.

Skuzzer's blaster was incredible! I've never seen one of those in the flesh, so that was a treat!

Mr Crane's air powered MagStrike was a heck load of fun! Seriously, GuN is becoming as much an exhibition of sheer modding talent as it is a Nerf War!

TBR's sentry gun was also a work of pure genius. I'm having to stop myself from using exclamation marks every sentence now, because I could. TBR, I love how that Rasberry Pi finds its way into everything!

I'm only gutted I wasn't there for more of it and didn't get to look at more of what everyone else had!

I was also happy to see another of my school colleagues attending with her sun, although she sat marking for the whole time, poor thing! It was all for show, though... teachers are lazy, have too much holiday, leave work at 1500 and have a great time for the rest of the eventing etc.

Big Al's double Raider (Rampage?) was fantastic!!!! He and I seem to have a thing for doubling up blasters. Inspired by his Lawbringerx2  creation, I ducttaped two fearless fires together, which was great fun for the time I was there! Not to mention the superhero themed blasters which were kicking about and looking gorgeous.

I enjoyed using the doubled Fearles Fire. It was great being able to empty one and then switch to the other. I wonder how long it'll be before Hasbro thinks of that...

It looked slick and well run BGUK and team, you are Bo$$es (that's how it's spelt in the modern youth vernacular!) I second what BGUK said about behavior. Please everyone try to listen in on briefings so that we can get started smoothly with each round.

My legs hurt today which can only be a good sign of lots and lots of running action - mostly trying to out sprint zombies but also flanking John Conner and other games highlights. I'd say it was another fun GuN all round.

Lots of great blasters on display - including another Retaliator fan (as well as having a fine Chris vector stryfe) - sorry I've forgotten your name fella, but if you are reading this hope you enjoyed it as well.

As much fun as the Apollo was i'm holding off running out to stock up on rival kit. The equivalent of the Retaliator hasn't been released yet - when it does I might be tempted to go all out. The sheer power out the box meant a lot of time I just had to point it to have the desired effect, which is good because ammo was in short supply and harder to find in the fallen leaves on the outside areas!

And my trusty Retaliator which has been used in every event I've been to since last January may finally have fired it's last dart. When bits of body shell are dropping out the mag well you figure it's probably time to retire it from active service. It's done 10 events and shot thousands of darts so can't complain, plus I have three others at home waiting to see some action Smile

I'll send a message to the chapel to ask them to check.

As always it was great to welcome BigAl and his family down from Scotland, and even better that I was able to reward such an epic journey with the mastodon. Their kids gave it a good workout during the setup, and it was an absolute blast to face off against him and dodge the shots neo style.

Dustybin finally managed to make it back to GuN on his birthday, and for all he complains about a lack of friends on Discord, he and his mates seemed to form a good team. No new integration to show off though... Smile

Scuzzer and MrCrane made the trip across to the right side of the pennines again, with lots of cool new gear. The hpa powered magstrike was lots of fun, and quick, it felt like it had finished firing before you'd even finished pulling the trigger. Downsides were the weight, the lack of oomph, and the presumed cost of getting so many magstrike clips!
As for the Desolator... I'd convinced myself months ago that I didn't need one... yeah, that went out of the window when I held this... It light, its comfortable, and its very very very pretty. And thats before the work that Blastersmiths did on it!

Franksie made his second GuN appearance and fit right in with the marshaling team, helping setup and clear up games. His rapidpistol is a lot quieter than mine, and just as powerful. A big thanks to you mate for the care package!

TBR and Dazzle brought their usual fare of awesome gear, with the added addition of the speedswarm sentry turret. I got caught by it a couple of times. Can't wait to see what they cook up over winter.

We had less church members, and a fair few new faces, but a good core of returning players from the local community.

Sorry to hear about the retaliator OMN, it certainly has served you well over the year, and I can say it has certainly outclassed me on many an occasion.

I must say, I found the rivals blasters interesting, what the atlas lacks in distance, it certainly makes up for in presence, and the apollo definitely has the performance. 12 rounds when you fire 2 at once means the atlas doesn't go very far, and the clip release really is a faff. however, the ability to have a clip in the other hand and literally pop it over the rivals balls is cool.

Thanks guys, I had a great day!

We were lucky the weather held out thats for sure...

Good sportsmanship all round and other than some of those kids talking over BGUK I've got no gripes!

I will have to get some new safety glasses next time as mine gave me a pretty severe headache for reasons unknown

The quality of everyones blasters seems to improve every event and its getting pretty impressive!

My magstrike performed flawlessly which im very happy about, though I think I may have to design something to help get the clips in faster... I got caught short a few times as its a bit too fiddly!

Apologies to the people I shot in the face, the darts come out pointing slightly upwards so when I think I'm aiming for the chest it turns out to be the face...
Even worse was when I started aiming down, the next person to come through the door was was quite small so got a face full too! oops

Shame i missed out sounds like a solid event!
I like the sound of the blaster exotica and sheer impressiveness, i do believe we aught to be showing off our blasters more so to encourage others to follow our path.
Some of the games look great and im happy all round it came out well!

I wondered when that would surface. Very Happy It's the only one we're ever doing since they're a complete pain in the arse to work on internally. It's all very narrow wiring channels and twists and turns. Even with a MOSFET, it's a challenge to get the motor wires to the forward end. That said, it is the only thing I could ever see replacing my Stryfe and Raider stock combo.

GuN 11 for myself was a bit of a mixed one, through no fault of BGUK and team... basically I had a headache for most of the afternoon (which got increasingly worse and which extended into the evening) which really put a dampener on it for me, but I tried to soldier on Smile. So if I came across grumpy to anyone, that's why.

There was some lovely blasters on show, my favorite being from a guy who's name I can't remember (but that's nothing different for me) who had a gorgeous Nerf orange blaster with an extended barrel pipe on the front, he had his red headband on his glasses arms near the end. That I thought looked like he had put together a really clean smart looking blaster. I didn't get the chance to take a good look/chat mainly due to the aformentioned grumpyness.

Due to our always being a bit late we missed out on the warm up style games which I have to admit are my favorite, I love a bit of meatgrinder etc

I got to play my favorite gametype 'Terminator', always fun as it's an excuse to wander round and shoot people and not generally have to worry about getting hit, although there was a lot more Mega's around so attention had to be paid. Also I had a full face mask that I brought with me in preparation and I'm glad I did as someone's Dad hit me point blank with a Megadart that would have really stung.

I also got to try out my static Sentry Gun.... it works! I can't really see a time when I'm going to use it but the point was 'can I make one' not 'let's make something useful'. Also it wouldn't be tooooo difficult to swap out the swarm fire for a rapidstrike Very Happy

I'm still bringing too many blasters and feeling like I have to use them all, I think I'm in love with the idea of duel wielding, but it's not actually that good an idea in practice.

For the Over 13 games I gave a couple of the Church guys my Under 13's IMR powered stryfe's which they seemed to like so that was good. They were asking questions about them at the end, I think they are thinking of purchasing some, but due to my grumpyness as near the end my head was really pounding I wasn't very talkative, if someone here is able to comunicate with these guys, they might need some purchasing advice and I don't think they are on here.

The orange pipe bit was on a painted vector kit, very nice looking, no idea who he was, but I think he's on here (possibly StrudyNinja?)

Given the two church elders come in month in, month out, I was going to chat with Justajolt and Old_man_nerf and see about getting them their own blasters as a thank you

I have no quarms contributing a few quid towards this. I'm sure it's already been thought about but I assume you wouldn't be giving them a LiPo'd up blaster. (safety first!) When they spoke to me they were asking about batteries and I mentioned that the one's they were using had two IMR's.
